"No system" to reunite children with parents in detention, former Obama official says

Source: CBS News

In a rare reversal, President Trump said Wednesday the U.S. will maintain "zero-tolerance" at the border but will allow migrant families to stay together temporarily, backing down on his own administration's policy separating children from their parents who have come to the U.S. illegally.

<snip>

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says they are taking "immediate steps" to implement the president's new executive order. However, it's unclear if or when the children already separated will reunite with their parents.

Alex Antonio and his 2-year-old son Jeremy were released after being initially detained for the maximum period of 72 hours. The release came around the same time President Trump signed his executive order, reports CBS News' David Begnaud. The Honduran man said that while in custody he heard that families were being separated and he feared it would happen to him and Jeremy. For the more than 2,300 children already separated from their parents, the executive order may not change anything immediately.

"There is currently no system in place to reunite children with parents who are in detention," Open Society Fellow Bob Carey said. He used to run the Office of Refugee Resettlement during the Obama administration, the federal agency responsible for caring for the separated children.

Carey says ORR's shelter system was designed for minors who arrived alone at the border, typically adolescent boys, and is not equipped for the influx of infants, toddlers and young children that were separated from their parents under the president's "zero tolerance"policy.

That bastard occupying the White House is attempting to make it sound like his damned executive order to stop this crime (which he only days ago said wasn't possible) is going to fix everything when in fact that order is only good for 20 days. It's way past time for our repub Congress Critters to start impeachment proceedings.

Trump is making this move a). as an attempt to "preserve his brand", b). there's money to be made in these private detention facilities, c). the EO is meant to look like he is "doing something" to stop this nightmare that he created while giving cover to his cronies in Congress to come up with some loathsome immigration bill that will satisfy him, Miller, and their atrocious base. Anyone else tired of being gaslighted yet??

The guy making the statement in the headline, Bob Carey, is not just a "former Obama Official". That means zilch. He was he head of child refugee resettlement, that's his special qualification to speak on the subject.

Thumbs down for this CBS editor, or avid Trump supporter.

And pass with a super majority the children are returned at once by this government , no excuses. If we can put a man on the moon we can surely d o this at once , no matter what trump wants. They should make this a top priority now , today , get all Children tracked down and returned, and turn over every leaf , use any powers to get this done , and refuse anything getting thru Congress until this is completely done, and no additional attachments to any bills. Just get these kids returned to their families, now. Those who refuse shouldn't be in our government anymore.
