First Step to Helping Children Sent to New York: Find Them

Source: New York Times

As reports came in of hundreds of children sent quietly to New York after being separated from their families at the southern border, consular officials from Central American countries scrambled to help.

Overnight, their jobs had changed from processing passports and visas from their offices in Midtown Manhattan and on Park Avenue to providing emergency humanitarian aid to children taken from their parents under a Trump Administration policy.

But the first step was finding them.

That process was thrown into more disarray on Wednesday when President Trump signed an executive order ending the policy that separated children from their parents. It appeared that children were continuing to arrive in New York as late as Wednesday night.

Consular offices are often involved in cases of unaccompanied migrant youth, especially when children want to return to their countries voluntarily. But this situation was “atypical,” according to José Vicente Chinchilla, the consul general of El Salvador, because they did not even know children separated from their families were coming to New York, let alone how many.

Republicans stood silent (mostly) despite having control of both House and Senate.

Republicons can't govern.

There were a lot awful things he could have done to throw red meat to his base. He could have held families indefinitely (which is what he's doing now) and ramped up the terribleness as we got more and more accustomed to it.

But, NO, not Trump. He went straight to prying crying, terrified babies out of their mothers' arms to be shipped off to... ?

And he thought that normal human beings would just shrug it all off. Like a defenseless, frightened, and crying baby doesn't provoke an instinctive protective reaction in anyone who sees or hears it. This reaction has been honed by millions of years of evolution. Everyone feels it.

Unless you are not normal. Unless there is something seriously wrong with you. Unless you are a textbook sociopath.

They have no plans to return them or re-unite them with parents. There has been little record keeping.

The Trump regime is not even competent at the fascism they aspire to. Fascists are generally renowned for record-keeping and bureaucracies and red tape.

Just thuggery.
