Manafort wants to bar mention of links to Trump at trial

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — Attorneys for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort want a judge to bar any mention of Manafort's connections to the president at his Virginia trial.

Manafort's lawyers filed their motion Friday in federal court in Alexandria ahead of next month's scheduled trial. Manafort is charged in Virginia with hiding tens of millions of dollars from the IRS he earned advising pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine. He faces a separate indictment in Washington.

In court papers, Manafort's lawyers argue that because Manafort's alleged crimes occurred before he ever served on President Donald Trump's campaign, any mention of Manafort's connections to Trump are irrelevant.

" (T)here is a very real risk that the jurors in this case — most of whom likely have strong views about President Trump, or have likely formed strong opinions as to the well-publicized allegations that the campaign colluded with Russian officials — will be unable to separate their opinions and beliefs about those matters from the tax and bank fraud matters to be tried before them in this case," lawyers Kevin Downing, Thomas Zehnle and Jay Nanvati wrote.

Racist, homophobic, misogynistic speech and actions. Apparently, it’s true: You can’t always get what you want.

Ooh oooh! While we are wishing on stars, I’d like to spend two weeks to a month on Maui, Ocean front, but anywhere will do. Summer is great, but I have a 15 year old trying to get a job, and I’d really love to come when the whales migrate close to the island.

Well, what the heck? If he can dream big and request adding things that help and ignoring things that can hurt, I think I should be able to do the same.

Mueller can nail him on these charges without mentioning Trump.

They’ll have to mention him for the D.C. trial, though.

where his "past (illegal) dealings" lead up to his being a conduit for those changes in GOP platform policies and having direct involvement in hand-picking the VP candidate. He then "officially" exited the "public" scene (but continued behind the scenes to move the Russia ball forward).

<...>

Mike Pence owes the lofty perch he occupies today to none other than Paul Manafort, the short-lived Trump campaign manager who was forced out of that public role in Trump World after The New York Times reported apparent records of millions of dollars in payments to Manafort for his work on behalf of the pro-Russia political party of Ukraine’s former president, Viktor F. Yanukovych, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin—the same Vladimir Putin who put his thumb on the scales of the U.S. presidential election in favor of Donald Trump. It was Manafort who engineered Pence’s selection as Trump’s running-mate, knocking out New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who, according to reports, had already been offered the slot. And even though Manafort, who has since been revealed to have had other business dealings with other oligarchs from the former Soviet bloc, officially left the Trump campaign in August, he remained an advisory presence during the transition, and was said to talk with Pence regularly, according to a report in The Daily Beast.

In November, a former Trump campaign official told reporters Olivia Nuzzi and Asawin Suebsaeng that Trump himself was likely on the phone with Manafort “every day.” And given the vetting process presumably taking place during that time, and Flynn’s and Manafort’s mutual connections to Kislyak and other Russian figures, it seems unlikely that any concerns to that effect regarding Flynn’s appointment to a high-level security post would never have come up.

Much easier to issue one, much less fallout for D Rump to pardon Manafort, for crimes that don't have mentions of T Rump all throughout the trial transcripts.

Trump only cares about Trump, so if he's not mentioned at the VA trial, he won't care a whit about Manafort.

We see him going against his own lawyers' best advice, over and over again.

But he does have a team of lawyers and political hacks working to get him out of his own legal and political troubles. Every crooked underling like Manafort that goes down brings dRump closer to going down.

He didn't think up the idea of pardoning his way out of his troubles, the lawyers and political hacks around him did. He latched onto the idea, he gets to be king and rule by fiat, and all his troubles go away. He thinks.

And he is pretty easy to understand and predict, in my opinion. Every time he goes against his own lawyers and political spin advisors' advice, it's because the advice is getting in the way of him saying or doing something he wants to say/do.

His relationship with his lawyers and accountants and apprentices is -- he tells them he wants something done, and doesn't know how they're going to do it.

And if and when they get it done, he takes the money/power/credit, and he'll keep them employed. He wants to commit crimes and evade taxes, he doesn't care how they work to make that happen for him, as long as the dynamic stays the same. He thinks up something he wants (always illegal, crooked, nazi). He gets 'bright boys' to navigate the business, legal, tax systems for him. He gets what he wants. That's the level of thought and planning he's always put in to anything he's ever 'worked' on.

Manafort can't get pardons for his state criminal cases, but any hope for federal crimes pardons is weakened by how close the person getting the pardon is to the guy who tries to get away politically with issuing the pardon. Take that guy's name out of court transcripts, and the pardon looks a lot less politically damaging.

No can do. But I will promise to have accurate thoughts when I mention republican misleader Dirty Donny, oops, I mean republican misleader Comrade Casino, or the deceitful and mendacious republican party, and their sicko traitorous relationship with the republican defendant.

You can trust me. I'm not a republican.
