WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday warned Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons, saying it would face the wrath of the entire world if it did so, but added that he hoped it would never be necessary for the United States to take military action against the country.
In an interview with political columnist Hugh Hewitt conducted on Friday and broadcast the following day on MSNBC, Pompeo said that whatever the fate of the international nuclear deal with Iran, it would not be in Tehrans interest to seek nuclear arms. I hope they understand that if they begin to ramp up their nuclear program, the wrath of the entire world will fall upon them, he said.
Wholly separate from if they spin a couple of extra centrifuges, if they began to move to a weapons program, this is something the entire world would find unacceptable and wed end up down a path that I dont think is in the best interests of Iran, Pompeo said. He said, however, he was not talking about a U.S. military response.
When I say wrath, dont confuse that with military action. When I say wrath, I mean the moral opprobrium and economic power that fell upon them. Thats what Im speaking to. Im not talking to military action here. I truly hope that thats never the case. Its not in anyones best interests for that.

(9,688 posts)that the Obama administration (with the crucial help of John Kerry, Ernie Moniz, and Wendy Sherman) managed to pull off - the result of many years of delicate negotiations. To give an idea of the steepness of the odds: I just ran across a 2010 piece by Hendrik Hertzberg, who mentioned how tricky Obama's simultaneous sanctions-and-negotiation approach was, and who basically predicted that it was a probably impossible goal. But 5 years later, they DID it. They DID it. It was WORKING.(Honestly, I believe that Moniz and Kerry and their counterparts in Iran deserve the Nobel Peace prize for their work.)
And Trump just walked away from all of that.
If Iran starts building nuclear weapons again, it's ALL on the Trump regime.
The contrast of the primitive, "tough-guy" talk of this dishonest, fake regime with the finesse and determination that it took to make the Iran nuclear deal happen in 2015 is just. . well.. painful.
I resent the fact that their literally thoughtless and (IMO) treasonous approach to international affairs endangers us all.
Zero respect.

(8,200 posts)The invasion of Iraq was supposedly going to be a cake walk. Couple of months tops and we will be have their oil fields under our control. Then it was to be off to Iran for a total domination of the Middle East. That is what the spelled out in their PNAC documented blue print. Obama should have had every damn one of them tried for war crimes. They took us to war on lies and now they have the biggest liar in the history of the nation as their, not my, president taking up where Bush left off. The Iran deal had to be rescinded before they could launch their next phase.

(54,527 posts)Republicans are cowards. They never attack ANYBODY they think will shoot back (Iraq was not a deviation from that, just a miscalculation).
Reagan attacked the Caribbean Island of Grenada. Bush, Sr. attacked Panama. In 1991, he drove Saddam back to the Iraq-Kuwaiti border, but didn't push into Iraq. The fact that this was actually a WISE decision was probably pure coincidence.
But neither Reagan or either Bush attacked Iran, North Korea, or any "axis of evil" countries. Why? Because they would shoot back, that's why! Republicans want heroes and "Mission Accomplished" banners, not body bags.
Send cruise missiles into Tehran, and expect bombs to go off on the Lexington Avenue Line in Manhattan at rush hour. Ain't gonna happen. The Joint Chiefs will have Trump, Pence, Ryan and McTurtle picked up and quarantined in the name of National Security before they follow an order to carry out an unprovoked attack on Iran.
