State trooper flies Confederate flag above his cruiser parked at home

Source: Southern Poverty Law Center

A Washington State Patrol trooper who flew a Confederate flag above his parked police cruiser claimed he was not aware of the “implications” of such a symbol.

But at least one neighbor was offended when they saw the flag flying above the state patrol cruiser parked at the Silverdale, Washington, home of trooper James Manning and tipped off the local newspaper, the Kitsap Sun.

State Patrol troopers in Washington state are allowed to take their patrol cars home during their off-duty hours and the vehicles frequently are parked outdoors.

State Patrol supervisors found out about the matter when the newspaper filed a public records request seeking access to the trooper’s personnel file and agency regulations regarding the display of offensive symbols, specifically the Confederate flag.

Washington trooper flies Confederate flag above patrol car in Silverdale
A Washington State Trooper who flew a Confederate flag above his driveway claimed he inherited the flag from his grandfather and didn't realize the "implications" of it, according to a state patrol spokesperson.

SILVERDALE — A Washington State Patrol trooper who flew a Confederate flag at his Silverdale home with his official vehicle parked underneath in view of neighbors took the flag down after his supervisors were tipped off by a public records request from the Kitsap Sun.

Trooper James Manning claimed he inherited the flag from his grandfather and further claimed he was not aware of the "implications" of such a symbol, State Patrol spokesman Kyle Moore said.

Manning, who has been with the State Patrol since at least 2002, did not return a message left Wednesday with State Patrol dispatchers seeking comment.

The Confederate flag is so inflammatory that simply flying it on private property or being photographed wearing Confederate flag boxers has resulted in the firing of law enforcement officers from their jobs in other states. Moore said the State Patrol was not investigating the matter as misconduct because Manning took down the flag and no official complaint was lodged.

The flag could still affect Manning's ability to do his job, however. A local defense attorney said if Manning investigated a person of color, the attorney would try to use the photo at trial to impugn Manning’s credibility in front of jurors. The attorney cited two court cases — one from federal court in 2001 that found that it is reasonable to view the flag as a racist symbol.

The flag was brought to the attention of the Kitsap Sun after a person who lives near Manning was disturbed by the association of the publicly owned vehicle of a law enforcement officer parked under the flag. That person asked not to be named, saying they feared retaliation from the State Patrol.

3. Civil War reenactment and you are a character actor;

4. Movie set (period piece);

5. You're in China/India/somewhere in Asia and they fly it (just like the fly Nazi flags or anything glitzy) because they haven't a clue;

6. You're trying to lower property values for tax reasons; and

7. A temporal anomaly, and the Doctor is about to visit

8. You are on a desert island and all you have to attract passing ships is this flag and a David Alan Coe CD.

I yield to your superior imagination and reference to the Doctor.

But, in fairness, I think the whole Civil War reenactment thing falls into one of my two categories. In a sane world, no one would voluntarily be on the South's side.

For that matter, isn't the whole thing weird? Do they do that with any other wars anywhere in the world? The only reason I can think is that there are still people who want to re-fight the war so the South can come out on top.

It was probably 15 or so years ago. Maybe more; maybe less.

It was put on by several military schools, ROTC, etc, and re-enacted a specific battle that occurred on the spot. Whoever "wins" is whoever won that given battle back then. Apparently, it's a good way to get young soldiers to understand, from a practical level, how battlefield tactics work.

With cannon and horses and whatnot, it was truly an impressive show, with lots of people, in character, giving history lessons, and the personal accounts of real people who were there. There were people doing blacksmith stuff, making butter, etc.

Bit like a live action Ken Burns (the PBS Civil War guy) documentary. Very valuable and interesting way to learn history.

I don't see it as any different than medieval shows, really. Just better documented.

From its earliest beginnings the idea of justice, within our system, has been nothing more than a blatant lie
The idea of unbiased law and order distributed by the very ones that wish we would die
From the very start the cops sole purpose was to protect white interest
U.S. Marshals were established to suppress indigenous resistance.
But it's not just the cops, there's more at stake than that
It's the prison guards, the FBI, and all they say "protects"
The Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marines
All support this racist shit where you're 3/5 a human being.
Don't feed me this "white rights" shit like no one understands you
You're not oppressed you're a fucking killer and the cops stand behind you
Time and time again, we see it on the streets
Cops support the KKK and the values that they teach
And when people in communities try to fight back
Racists use their right to free speech to justify their attack
And we all feel the backlash when we voice our opposition
Because the cops will stop at nothing to defend the Klan's position
So we're the ones that feel the long arm of "justice"
Tighten around our throats to ensure our silence
Because the cops are the KKK
And the opposite is true
That the same racist fucker that burns the cross at night
Hides behind a badge in daylight
And is said to be protecting you.
Blue by day, white by night
Killer cops on the streets taking away our rights
Blue by day, white by night
Just sit back, don't make a fuss, or they'll snuff out your life
Blue by day, white by night
Killer cops on our streets issuing our "rights"
Blue by day, white by night
Just sit back, don't make a fuss, or they'll snuff out your fucking life.

flying a flag of any kind is making a major statement. setting it up and keeping it displayed requires effort. you don't just fly a flag if you haven't thought it through.

not buying the excuse.

Washington is a blue state, but it gets redder and redder the further out into the provinces you get.

I don't know why they don't all just move to Mississippi or some fucking place...
