Rep. Joe Crowley defeated by challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

The fourth-ranking Democrat in the House has lost his bid for another term: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year old activist who ran on abolishing ICE and making Medicare a universal program, defeated Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in an upset.
Crowley is the first incumbent Democrat to lose renomination since 2014, when a Massachusetts Democrat was brought down by scandal. Crowley, who was first elected in 1998, had grown his profile inside the party and faced no personal controversies.
But Ocasio-Cortez argued that the increasingly non-white district, which stretches from the Bronx to Queens, had been represented too long by a figure from the local political machine. Crowley, who chaired the Queens Democratic Party while serving in Congress, had played a major role in determining candidates for local offices. Ocasio-Cortez said that he had grown too distant he enrolled his children in a northern Virginia school and too dependent on donations from corporate PACs.
Crowley took the primary seriously, spending $1.5 million in his first primary since 2004. He was the first member of Democratic leadership to endorse the Houses universal Medicare bill, and he joined protests against the Trump administrations travel ban and its immigration control policies.

The good news is that it should be an easy Democratic district in November

(42,862 posts)Sarandon's final-hour bandwagon hopping-on seemed a bit perfunctory and calculated if you ask me ("nobody asked ya, Jackie!'') and I got the feeling that it was just latching on to a favored candidate so she could personally "take credit" for influencing the win. Trying to redeem herself, perhaps?

(43,548 posts)are ill at ease with politics as usual, money in politics, and promises for change hindered by a corporate power structure. Populism is a force on the left as well as the right. I don't think Democrats could rule very well from the far left, but it's good to have their voices aboard!
maybe if enough of the old guard get replaced, the Vampires will have a fight on their hands.

.@repjoecrowley could have leveraged his position to stand up for #DREAMers, but didnt. He ignored the grassroots power in his own turf - so his constituents made their voices heard, and voted for @Ocasio2018 instead.

Indivisible groups like NYC Indivisible Action Council, @bkindivisible, & @es_indivisible have been inspired by @Ocasio2018 for months, and worked hard to get her on the ballot and volunteered with the campaign. They showed up for her because she had shown up for them.

They are apparently unaware Democrats are not in charge, and it's dangerous to make deals with a pathological liar like Donald Trump.

Dude outspent her like 10-1. It's a real grass roots underdog story.

I'll buy the underdog story, but trying to characterize this as though Crowley lost because it was a "wake-up call", is way off base
Incidently, Crowly immediately endorsed Ortez after the election tonight

(45,674 posts)The campaign was about being out of touch with the constituents, and they voted for change.
This has been happening to Republicans nationwide over the last few years where they have gotten replaced by wingnuts. The hard left finally got one.

Joe Crowley, 10-term Democrat expected to be partys next House leader, loses to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, in New York
And then when you read the article from The Guardian you get to this point:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jun/26/democrats-primaries-upset-joe-crowley-alexandria-osacio-cortez
Donald Trump weighed in as well, apparently viewing Crowleys defeat to a leftwing candidate as a referendum on him. The president wrote on Twitter shortly after the race was called: Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosis place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, hes out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!
Hey sexual predator......................it is about you and it is about not being "nicer" to you and your version of "respectful" .................your an idiot and you are fucking deranged--------------------we are coming for you asshole, your ego is so fucking psychotic, that you fucking think that people need to be nicer and respectful of you if they lose a race...................either one of these candidate's have one mission---------------you and your illegitimate party and defeating you because your a fucking sexual predator and fucking traitor............................

especially those who only just 'discovered' Ocasio a couple of days ago and only started tweeting shit when it looked like she might actually win.
Ocasio's win was a win for the Democratic Party, not the haters, not the GOP, not the socialists, not the Greens, and not the Bernindependents...
NO, the entire party "establishment" was not rooting for her to lose, nor was there any grand conspiracy to rig the primary...
NO, this wasn't the "Biggest Political Upset EVER!!!" Please just stop...
And NO, she isn't going to be the goddamned house speaker as a freshman so quit asking... Also, how about we concentrate on flipping congress FIRST before dividing the spoils?
And NO, while this was a well planned and well-organized victory, it doesn't mean we need to start running socialist candidates in Arkansas or wherever...
And YES, the party is unified and remains strong and Crawley's gracious, classy conceding of the race and immediate call for everyone to back Ocasio is all up in the face of those idiot pundits who keep playing up some nonexistent intra-party civil war...
P.S. Extra Credit for Ocasio *repeatedly* refusing to jump on the "Bernie Bait" (i.e., pissing on Dems, spilling tea, Monday-morning quarterbacking and airing out all our dirty laundry) despite the fact that CNN was dangling it multiple times during the interview...

(34,142 posts)I grow weary of everything having to be a scream fest (not saying this is because I have not looked but guessing it must be) and the best or worst or whatever. She won and it is good. He was gracious as it should be. We have got to stop this. Just because people did not like one person does not mean they did not vote for that person but still does not like them and it does not make them some kind of party criminal. This place is looking so crazy some days that I wonder if we could even win a fight against a kid gagged and tied to a chair. Thankfully we still can. We do so much better on issues than we do elections.
