Trump quotes Obama, Clinton in wall pitch

Source: The Hill

BY KYLE BALLUCK - 01/06/19 07:53 AM EST

President Trump quoted former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in a series of tweets early Sunday promoting his planned border wall, adding that the structure would stop "99% of our illegal Border crossings."

“ 'We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked...' Barrack Obama, 2005. I voted, when I was a Senator, to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in...' Hillary Clinton, 2015," Trump tweeted initially.

"....The only reason they do not want to build a Wall is that Walls Work! 99% of our illegal Border crossings will end, crime in our Country will go way down and we will save billions of dollars a year! A properly planned and constructed Wall will pay for itself many times a year!" he added in a subsequent post.

Funding for a wall along the border with Mexico, which Trump repeatedly promised during the presidential campaign, is at the heart of a partial government shutdown that has stretched into a third week.

Two charts demolish the notion that immigrants here illegally commit more crime

States with larger shares of undocumented immigrants tended to have lower crime rates than states with smaller shares in the years 1990 through 2014. "Increases in the undocumented immigrant population within states are associated with significant decreases in the prevalence of violence," authors Michael T. Light and Ty Miller found.

That's just a simple correlation, of course, and it's well documented that many factors beyond immigration can affect the crime rate. So Light and Miller ran a number of statistical analyses to more clearly isolate the effects of illegal immigration from those other factors. Among other things, they find that the relationship between high levels of illegal immigration and low levels of crime persists even after controlling for various economic and demographic factors such as age, urbanization, labor market conditions and incarceration rates.

All told, Light and Miller sliced the data 57 ways to see whether there was anything they missed, but not one of their analyses showed any positive relationship between illegal immigration and crime. They concluded that not only does illegal immigration not increase crime, but it may actually contribute to the drop in overall crime rates observed in the United States in recent decades.

as the general population. And that OVER HALF of our agricultural workers are undocumented, so we would literally starve without them.

Clinton did vote for the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which authorized building a fence along about 700 miles of the border between the United States and Mexico.

But the fence she voted for is not as substantial as the wall Trump proposed. Trump himself called the 2006 fence a "nothing wall."

Thomas’ statement is partially accurate, but ignores important context. We rate it Half True.

The quote is accurate. The context is helpful. Presumably most people know what she was referencing. Trump is an idiot. He tries to paint her as being supportive of the wall and supportive of open borders at the same time. Makes no sense.

However, there are significant differences between the fence Clinton voted for, and the wall Trump pitched during the campaign, which he promised would be an impenetrable, physical, tall and "beautiful" wall that Mexico would pay for.

Nowhere does Obama advocate a wall is the solution ... or the lack of a wall is THE problem.

then they go back home
It is the ones that come to work for companies that are breaking the law by hiring them. Why don't we solve that problem first? And set up a work visa program so we can get workers for the new Green Deal, we will need them. We already need them but let's make them legit, organized and controlled.
