Pence says Trump has made 'no decision' on declaring a national emergency

Source: NBC News

"What I expect the president will do tonight is explain to the American people that we have a humanitarian crisis at our southern border," the vice president said.

Vice President Mike Pence told NBC News on Tuesday that President Donald Trump has yet to make a determination on whether to declare a national emergency in order to build portions of the massive wall he seeks along the U.S. southern border.

"The president has made no decision with regard to a national emergency," Pence said on "Today." Pence earlier said, as Trump has for days, that such a declaration is "something he's looking at and considering."

Asked directly if Trump will use his Oval Office address Tuesday night — his first as president — to declare a national emergency, Pence said he simply expects Trump to "explain to the American people that we have a humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border."

"It is a real crisis," Pence said, adding: "Tonight he will tell the American people why Congress should act."

Trump will describe border "crisis" in Oval Office address, Pence says

President Trump will use his Oval Office address tonight to "lay out the facts about what the American people view as a humanitarian and genuine crisis at our southern border," Vice President Mike Pence said Tuesday in a "CBS This Morning" interview.

He did not specify whether the president will use the address to declare a national emergency to free up funding for his border wall, a move Mr. Trump is considering if Congress can't reach an agreement on the issue that has led to partial government shutdown that is in its third week. "It's something we are looking at," he said.

"The time has come for the Democrats to come to the table, and we have to start negotiating," Pence said. "Not just to address the government shutdown but to address the humanitarian crisis at the border."

The president's prime-time address, his first ever from the Oval Office, is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. The remarks will run no longer than eight minutes, according to the White House. Mr. Trump is expected to address the partial shutdown, the border crisis and the deadline for federal workers' paychecks.

He'll go on another rambling, disorganized rant against his
perceived enemies. He won't say or do anything definitive. He'll do that thru twitter.

Maybe because there is no national emergency.

States with larger shares of undocumented immigrants tended to have lower crime rates than states with smaller shares in the years 1990 through 2014. "Increases in the undocumented immigrant population within states are associated with significant decreases in the prevalence of violence," authors Michael T. Light and Ty Miller found.

That's just a simple correlation, of course, and it's well documented that many factors beyond immigration can affect the crime rate. So Light and Miller ran a number of statistical analyses to more clearly isolate the effects of illegal immigration from those other factors. Among other things, they find that the relationship between high levels of illegal immigration and low levels of crime persists even after controlling for various economic and demographic factors such as age, urbanization, labor market conditions and incarceration rates.

All told, Light and Miller sliced the data 57 ways to see whether there was anything they missed, but not one of their analyses showed any positive relationship between illegal immigration and crime. They concluded that not only does illegal immigration not increase crime, but it may actually contribute to the drop in overall crime rates observed in the United States in recent decades.

8. Like Trump would tell Pence? Or tell anyone? Like withdrawal from Syria...

he just wakes up one day and decides to follow Putin's order to withdraw from Syria, without speaking w/his advisors. There's no reason to think he won't declare a national emergency on a whim, without speaking w/his advisors or Pence or anyone else.

This is total BS, I'd bet a bunch that drumpf has made up his mind to do this. My biggest fear is what else will he do with his "emergency powers"! My hope is that the courts will stop this dead in it's tracks since it's abundantly clear there is zero crisis except for PUtin's demands for destruction of the American worker and economy.

Well, that's new. Who, exactly, is being treated inhumanely? Families torn apart, kids in cages, kids dying?

I am suspicious of The Church Lady's wording.
