Chesapeake Bay health worsened in 2018 for the first time in a decade, report says

For the first time in a decade, the overall health of the Chesapeake Bay declined, dropping from a C- to a D+ in an annual State of the Bay report issued Monday.
Culprits in the decline include increased runoff from rainstorms in 2018 that were rendered more intense by a changing climate and continued failure in some jurisdictions to curb nutrient and sediment loads.
This is especially true in Pennsylvania, which consistently fails to meet most of its bay cleanup commitments, and where the chronically polluted Susquehanna River delivers half the bays freshwater.
Simply put, the bay suffered a massive assault in 2018, Will Baker, president of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, told reporters. The bays sustained improvement was reversed in 2018, exposing just how fragile the recovery is. Adding to the assault, Baker said, are plans by the Trump administration to roll back clean water and clean air regulations that will directly impact the watershed.

We've devoted billions and decades of work to bring back the Chesapeake Bay. Economic impacts to the regions is trillions of dollars.
The Bay is just about as critical to the planet as the Rainforest. It's disgusting to see this destruction of one of Americas most critical natural resources.

(811 posts)OMalley did nothing to stop the Dominion Cove export facility in Maryland and now we have pipelines all over the East Coast trying to get to it.

(811 posts)Governor Hogan stopped the pipeline from Pa through The western Maryland Rail Trail and then through the C and O Canal and under the Potomac River into WV through three counties to end at a very high polluting factory called Rockwool. WV politicians have plan to turn this exurb of DC into the Kanawa Valley. Will Hogan pull a trick or will National Park Service grant a right away? I dont know but I am grateful that he just vetoed it. Mountain Valley Pipeline just got permission to restart and Atlantic Coast Pipeline will probably restart. They just started exporting in March 2018 in Lusby Maryland. Dominion Cove is the name of conversion export facility. To understand our fight read The Danish Dilemma.

(22,967 posts)Combined with two hurricanes, the amount of pollution in runoff that ended up in the Bay must have been at a historical high.

(1,975 posts)I have spent 1/2 a lifetime on its waters - it was THE place to go for our vacations (we were in Florida, and got the Bay folks down in winter to the beach). I had a cousin, Lee Collins, who's written extensively about its near demise. (my cousin Kay was his wife, and I still miss her).
C&D Canal was a stomping ground.
I hate to hear this.
