Trump Appeals for Wall, Citing Misleading Statistics of Crisis and Crime Along Border

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — President Trump doubled down on one of the biggest gambles of his presidency on Tuesday night with a televised appeal to pressure Congress into paying for his long-promised border wall even at the cost of leaving the government partially closed until lawmakers give in.

Embarking on a strategy that he himself privately disparaged as unlikely to work, Mr. Trump devoted the first prime-time Oval Office address of his presidency to his proposed barrier in hopes of enlisting public support in an ideological and political conflict that has shut the doors of many federal agencies for 18 days.

In a nine-minute speech that made no new arguments but included multiple misleading assertions, the president sought to recast the situation at the Mexican border as a “humanitarian crisis” and opted against declaring a national emergency to bypass Congress, which he had threatened to do, at least for now. But he excoriated Democrats for blocking the wall, accusing them of hypocrisy and exposing the country to criminal immigrants.

“How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?” the president asked, citing a litany of grisly crimes said to be committed by illegal immigrants. Asking Americans to call their lawmakers, he added: “This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice. This is about whether we fulfill our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve.”

Without his adoring cult screaming "Lock her up" he loses a lot of his hot air. I wonder what BS he will do next when he sees the lackluster responses.

Really. He looked like a wreck, and he's terrible about reading a teleprompter. You need to be able to read it and still put some feeling into your words. He was dead and flat.

And the sniffing--does he have trouble breathing, or what? Can't talk and breathe at the same time?

His eyes were all squinty and he looked haggard and ruined. And demoralized. I think he finally feels like the trapped rat he is. There is no victory coming from this stunt.

to a "border security initiative", but in the fine print on the bottom it said that the donations were going right into the 2020 Trump for "president" fund. Trump sees that as a Trump slush fund, now that his "Foundation" has been deemed a ripoff. There was the usual false appeal to the Trumptards as "patriots", which makes their pointed heads swell with pseudo-pride.

Full disclosure, I didn't see these monetary appeals with my own eyes. I'm just relating what Rachel and Lawrence reported, and may have some minor details confused. But that's pretty much the gist of it. He's asked for money before and after his "momentous" speech from the Offal Office (misspelling intentional).

I think that's a close enough paraphrase, but when I heard it I thought "there's the signal to the troll farms to get busy making fake support calls, sending fake support emails, and ginning up fake social media campaigns to persuade the gullible"

Maybe the reality of being a puppet is sinking in. He didn't seem to be enjoying it tonight at all. Guess time will tell if it was another bald-faced "Russia, if you're listening..." moment

His right eye was almost closed most of the time, and, if you looked closely, you could see that his pupils were extremely uneven in size. The left looked normal (though somewhat dilated given the TV lights), and the right was very small.

The man does not look well.

(I haven't seen a recording of the speech)

What are the symptoms of facial palsy caused by stroke?

The lower part of one side of the face is normally affected. (the forehead is spared)
The hand, arm and or leg on one side of the body may become weak.
The brow and upper eyelid remain fully functional although the lower eyelid may be pulled down by the weight of the cheek. This happens because the cheek muscle loses its tone and strength.
The face tends to droop but a spontaneous or involuntary smile may be preserved. A voluntary smile is more difficult to achieve.
The corner of the mouth is weak, resulting in drooling.
There may be difficulty in understanding what is being said.
There may be difficulty in finding the right words and speech may be very difficult for the listener to understand.
Speech may be slurred because of weakness of the muscles responsible for speech.
Eating and drinking may also become difficult.
Confusion and loss of consciousness may develop.

These are the main symptoms but every stroke is different.
What are the symptoms of facial palsy when NOT caused by stroke?

There will be loss of movement, expression and function throughout one entire side of the face.
Difficulty blinking and closing the eye.
No ability to express emotion on the affected side.
The only muscles affected are the facial muscles. There is no weakness of the arm or leg.
Speech may be slurred but easily understood.
Understanding is not affected.
There is no difficulty finding the correct words for speech as may be the case in stroke.
Food and drink may leak from the weak corner of the mouth.
Confusion and loss of consciousness is not a symptom.
