Dulles closes screening lanes, lines sprawl in Atlanta as shutdown strains air travel

Source: Politico

Washington Dulles International on Monday became the latest airport to close screening lanes because of absences by unpaid TSA agents, adding to a pileup as the 24-day-old government shutdown strains air travel across the country.

Miami International and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental airports similarly announced checkpoint closures over the weekend because of a higher-than-usual rate of no-shows by TSA agents. Meanwhile, passengers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — the busiest in the world — were stuck in security lines more than an hour long Monday morning after closures of at least six security lanes, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

"We are down a few security lanes because of the shutdown," an Atlanta airport spokeswoman told POLITICO. "The lines are long but there is a continuous flow; they are moving."

The news came three days after TSA agents missed their first paychecks related to the shutdown. By Monday, the number of unscheduled absences at the agency had doubled to 7.6 percent, compared with 3.2 percent for the same day the previous year.

But we are specifically prohibited from engaging in a strike or any other type of organized work stoppage. The professionalism my colleagues have maintained through this have been a huge part in keeping the public on our side. I am personally not willing to put my career and my livelihood at risk because some toddler in the WH is throwing a temper tantrum. Most of my brothers and sisters would agree with me.

1) Like many of my collegues, I wanted to be a pilot but it is prohibitively expensive. Graduated with my BA, then found out my local community college was offering an ATC program, with priority hiring into the FAA. I have always kept ATC in the back of my mind, so I enrolled. A year and a half later, I had an AAS in ATC, then a year and a half after that, I was hired into the FAA.

2) I absolutely LOVE my job which is why this shutdown is so difficult for me. If this shutdown continues much longer, some decision will have to be made regarding my future as an air traffic controller. I have worked too damn hard to get this job, in a location I have dreamed of working, and it would be downright depressing for me to have to walk away from it.

I fear this will get exponentially worse in the next week, from news reports I'm reading.

Elections have consequences, so when people are hurt, bankrupted or killed due to this shutdown, let's do our part to remind every Repug we know of what they've done.

Some stories of the on-going pain suffered by some of our public servants told here:

Federal worker forced to ration insulin because of government shutdown

(snips)

“It’s like being held hostage,” Lorge said. “I’ve been a federal employee for six years, and I love it. I don’t get paid much, but I love working for the American people. That the government has put us in this position is like a punch in the gut.”

Lorge said she and her husband probably can afford to make ends meet for three or four more weeks. After that, she said she isn’t sure what might happen. The couple applied for unemployment but haven’t received word back yet.
