Republican, PA-12.
Very bizarre considering he just got sworn in again 2 weeks ago. Why did he run for office in November just to quit now? Something suspicious going on.

Not nearly enough of people like him in public life.
Thank you, OliverQ.
"He withdrew on October 17, 2017,[Trump nomination to be Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, commonly known as the "drug czar"] following reports that he had been the chief architect behind a bill that protected pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors and crippled the DEA's ability to combat the U.S. opioid epidemic"
Sorry to disagree. I think he ran as a 5 term shoe-in to preserve the seat.

Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.), who was just elected to a fifth term, announced Thursday that he is resigning from Congress this month to accept a job in the private sector. As of January 23, 2019, I am officially stepping down from Congress, Marino said in a statement. Having spent over two decades serving the public, I have chosen to take a position in the private sector where I can use both my legal and business experience to create jobs around the nation.
The former prosecutor was one of the first House Republicans to endorse Donald Trump for president and he was an informal adviser to the candidate. Marino has won handily in his heavily Republican district but faced a new reality as Democratic seized majority control of the House in November.
President Trump nominated Marino to be the nations drug czar in 2017, but Marino withdrew from consideration following a Washington Post/60 Minutes investigation detailing how the lawmaker helped steer legislation through Congress that weakened the Drug Enforcement Administrations ability to go after drug distributors, even as opioid-related deaths continue to rise.
Marinos 12th Congressional District, as drawn by a panel of judges last year, covers a large and deeply conservative swath of north and central Pennsylvania.

Went on a road trip up to Niagara Falls (Canadian side) a few years ago and went on I-81 most of the way which cuts through there. Am still trying to get over the windmills on the hills up there!
IMHO, being born and raised in Philly in SE PA, NE PA is "up there".

(22,681 posts)Until a special election can be held?
BumRushDaShow
(130,043 posts)and that has to be at least 60 days after the governor's declaration (which needs to be done within 10 days) post retirement/resignation. There is already a special election scheduled for at least one state seat for some time in March.
Here are some details for what to expect -
Marinos resignation will prompt a special election, in which each partys nominee will be selected by local party leaders at a nominating conference. Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf must issue a writ of election within 10 days of Marino stepping down. The special election must take place no fewer than 60 days after Wolf issues the proclamation.
Marinos district is solidly Republican. He won re-election last year by 32 points and President Donald Trump carried the 12th District by 36 points in 2016.
A crowd of Republicans is likely to seek the partys nomination for the open seat. When Marino was initially nominated as drug czar, several Republican names were floated for his old 10th District seat. (The Pennsylvania Supreme Court redrew the congressional map last year, ruling the previous one represented an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.)
Under the old district lines, the Republicans named as possible successors to Marino included state Rep. Fred Keller, Bradford County Commissioner Doug McLinko, Lycoming County Commissioner Tony Mussare, state Sen. Mario Scavello, Marinos district director Dave Weber, and state Rep. Jeff Wheeland. McClinko challenged Marino in the 12th District GOP primary last May and lost by 34 points.
