Shutdown Has Personally Affected 21 Percent of US: Poll

Last edited Thu Jan 17, 2019, 11:50 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Newsweek

The ongoing government shutdown—now the longest in U.S. history—has personally affected about one in five Americans, a new poll released this week showed.

The survey from The Economist/YouGov asked a number of questions about various ways folks might've been affected by the shutdown—things like being furloughed, or needing to visit a federal office impacted by closures or not being able to see a national park or monument.

The pollster asked respondents if they, or someone they knew, had been affected by these shutdown issues. From those results, The Economist/YouGov was able to calculate that, overall, 21 percent of Americans have been "personally affected" by the shutdown in some way. Further, 46 percent of Americans "know someone who is personally affected," while 50 percent did not personally know someone who had been affected.

The survey from The Economist/YouGov polled 1,500 U.S. adults from January 12 through January 15. It had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. Now in its 27th day, the shutdown was sparked by President Donald Trump's refusal to sign a stop-gap spending bill that did not include funding for the border wall he has long promised his supporters.

In the poll, 50% of respondents said Trump was the most to blame, and 32% said "Democrats in Congress."

Feb food stamps are coming on Jan 20th and then nothing more until the gov reopens. That is another 19.5 million households. Not people...households. It is about 38.5 million people.

That’s what I’ve heard, at least. Not all of government is shut down, but it’s enough that it indirectly affects everyone. Trump could care less, of course.

that tRump broke more laws. The danger is, we are one major incident away from a total collapse, a major earth quake or other natural disaster, a terrorist attack, anything that could bring a country, with a broken government and criminal foreign agents at the helm, down for the count.

5. Shopping Center Empty Today

Today I went to the nation’s first shopping center here in Portland, Oregon. It was empty, there were even fewer women with strollers and families who were there were having ice cream or ice skating, not shopping. Almost no one was carrying a shopping bag and it was very empty. This is partly the change from retail to on line but I also think that people are not shopping because they are federal workers or the economic and political uncertainty that Trump has created as the King of Chaos has made people afraid of the future.

for many here in the Valley. Made a trip to Costco, normally would have to park way away from the Building, not today, about a quarter of the lot was full. On my next stop, ask the store manager if they were running light,he said this whole week was a dead one. And expected to even get worse over the weekend.

Found on Twitter: Steve Vladeck @steve_vladeck

Our local federal court (the U.S. District Court for the [enormous] Western District of Texas) has just issued a general order freezing all civil litigation involving the federal government (except forfeiture cases) for the duration of the shutdown:

and an appropriate comment:

Replying to @steve_vladeck

Now Trump has managed to cripple the Judicial Branch. So be it. We cannot give in to this kind of hostage taking by that floch of malarial dreck. Otherwise, the ransom will be higher the next time.

This is all so stupid. How can the Republicans be so blind? The human toll is unconscionable. We have to put pressure on the Republican senators.

Unfortunately, they will do nothing. Cruz was just given another six-year pass to do nothing. Cornyn is up for re-election in 2020, but he hasn’t had any real challengers in the past so is probably safe. I’m not sure Beto could win against Cornyn, but he might try.

They don’t care except about their own personal wealth and the well being of the top 10% that they serve. It is all about power and the enjoyment of being mean.

and many of Americans don't know that they are impacted yet because they don't think about food safety inspections or federal law enforcement impacting their lives.
