Court picks Virginia redistricting plan that helps Democrats

Source: Charlotte Observer

RICHMOND, Va. - A panel of federal judges has chosen a redistricting map for Virginia's House of Delegates that could shift some districts toward Democrats and help the party gain control in this year's election.

The judges ordered a new map in June after ruling that lawmakers had racially gerrymandered eleven House districts by packing black voters into them.

On Tuesday, the judges chose new district lines from a series of proposals submitted by a special master. The judges gave all sides until Feb. 1 to file objections.

An analysis of the maps by the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project shows the plan could shift six Republican-held districts toward Democrats, including the district of House Speaker Kirk Cox, which would become 32 percent more Democratic.

But not unfairly so... it "helps Democrats" by leveling the playing field? Is that what they meant? NurseJackie Jan 2019 #1

This is what happened in Pennsylvania. Once the CDs were drawn iaw the Commwealth's constitution (compact and not splitting towns, cities and municpalities), our CD went from 13R-5D to 9R-9D. We still have districts that favor Rs to a more or lesser extent and so will VA.

Dick Cranwell was forced out when the Republicans moved his district line across the street from his house. He was pumped into a seat already held by a Dem. dick was ready to retire anyway but still...

The lines here for Congressional seats was also redraw by the courts which put McEachin in.
Bobby Scott's district used to run from Hampton to across the James (peanut country) then back across the river into a poor white neighborhood in Richmond, Oregon Hill. At one point I called Tom Bliley'#s Office to get help with my GI Bill - I was rudely told I wasn't in his district. I had to call back (no real internet at the time) and was shocked that I was in Bobby's district. Got the check 3 days later.

"help the Democrats", neglecting to note that this is a fix to GOP-gerrymandering that was purposely done to unfairly skew seats their way.

I am hoping that we can eventually get our state legislative seats fixed here in PA. The effort to get a fairer system of drawing lines apparently requires a change in the state Constitution and I think ballot initiatives, etc.
