Ross: 'I don't quite understand why' federal workers need food banks during shutdown

Source: The Hill

BY SYLVAN LANE - 01/24/19 09:26 AM EST

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Thursday that he was confused why thousands of federal workers, who've already missed one paycheck, are relying on food banks during the partial government shutdown.

Ross he didn't understand why some of the more 800,000 unpaid federal workers have flocked to food banks for meals instead of taking out loans against back pay guaranteed by a bill President Trump signed last week.

"I know they are and I don’t really quite understand why," said Ross, who's reportedly worth roughly $700 million.

"So the 30 days of pay that some people will be out, there’s no real reason why they shouldn’t be able to get a loan against it, and we’ve seen a number of ads of financial institutions doing that."

“Plenty of prisons,” said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

“And the Union workhouses?” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”

“They are. Still,” returned the gentleman, “I wish I could say they were not.”

“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?” said Scrooge.

“Both very busy, sir.”

“Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,” said Scrooge. “I’m very glad to hear it.”

During the Great Depression, while the working class sold apples on the corner, their wives worked in mansions for little and their children stopped their education and sold papers on the street corner, the multimillionaires entertained themselves with lavish ocean voyages, dining and dancing their cares away. The scurried throughout Europe and the Near East buying cargo ship loads of antiques. Some even had entire structures dissembled and shipped home to be rebuilt. If the depression hadn't have been halted by the efforts of FDR, child labor abolished, mandatory education, the 40 hour work week, social security, etc., etc. they would have stripped Europe bare.

Given their lack of compassion and insane greed we would still be living the life of desperation. This is the dream of their civilization that the wealthy what to recreate for us. It is long past the time for the working class to wakeup, take back control of government, pass protective labor laws and seize the trillions of dollars that the oligarchs have robbed from the working class. It is past time to reinstate the 90% tax codes that were imposed during the depression and remained law well after WWII.

The comment by Ross, while shocking, really shouldn't be shocking at all. We have sociopaths running our country with our lives in their hands. His is a typical response, which is devoid of any empathy or compassion, from a sociopath.

It was the same during the great depression when this speech was given 83 years ago by FDR.

This should be a big wake up call to the US. Middle class wages have been stagnant for 50 years. These federal workers have jobs that SHOULD BE supporting middle class lifestyles, but they aren't.

These aren't fast food/starter jobs. Starting pay for TSA agents is around $25K. I can't imagine that guards at national museums, park rangers, etc are making much more. If you're employed by the federal government you should make enough that you aren't living paycheck to paycheck. You should be making enough that you don't need SNAP or EIC or subsidized housing. This is fucking ridiculous.

That's it. Cull the herd. Get rid of the people who depend on government to buy bread. They're useless and a drain on the economy. Why should the rich pay for these slobs? Cut 'em off!

But alternatively, Ross might have an iota of compassion if he were to lose his money and live on Social Security. Ross is a thief anyway. He deserves some humiliation in the wheels of Justice.
