Bill puts W.Va. teachers back on edge a year after strike

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia public school teachers are back on edge after the introduction of a bill aimed at revamping the state's education system took aim at unions less than a year after a lengthy strike resulted in better pay.

The draft legislation unveiled Thursday includes promised additional pay raises but also other provisions that left some teachers smoldering.

. . .

"I can't believe what I just heard," said Christi Phillips, who was among the thousands of West Virginia striking teachers last year. "It was like a slap in the face. I really don't want to fight them again, but if this goes through, I'm afraid it's going to get ugly. I can't believe they would want to poke the bear again."

Among other things, the comprehensive 138-page bill would increase elementary school class sizes, establish savings accounts for families to pay for private school and require teachers to sign off annually on union dues.

Teachers have to pay union dues in CA, isn't it that way everywhere?

There is no annual renewal.

Annual sign-up allows for the teachers to "reflect' on if they want to continue membership.

Opt out of paying dues. I proudly pay my union dues every month.

It wasn't like that a few years ago. Now the non members can benefit from the the dues of the paying members. That sucks!

I was gonna throw it away but kept it. They said “public school employees can resign union membership and cease paying union dues”. I overheard an employee saying to the school union rep that were considering opting out because they could use that extra money. I work as a substuite at a regular school. And I noticed recently the employee who asked that question now gets put into the worst classes with difficult students as a para. Ha ha.

10. I was a sub and a teacher said that she was anti-union dues and she was

pissed off that she didn't have a choice (close shop union). I naturally did not want to sub for her since I am pro union and eventually became a union rep at my site. When my master teacher told me to join a union as soon as I got a contract I did...good advice. I told newer teacher over the years that the district didn't pay disability insur (even if you got pregnant) and they were grateful since they were unaware of this fact. Unions do a zillion things that most people aren't even aware of. I have benefited from the union a million different ways. Mostly people are short sighted and cheap. They don't want to pay the dues but they do want the benefits.

Capitalism is like slavery. You can't reform it and make life a bit easier for slaves, you just have to wipe it out and start a new economic system.

6. The teachers might have an easier time fighting the attack on the union by going at it another way

and push for a proposal where it is changed so that every 5 to 10 years both the public and the private school teachers that are members of the union vote on if they want to have to have their union dues automatically deducted every year or have to sign off on it every year.
That way it takes atleast some of the wind out of the sails for the anti union push.
