House approves bill to reopen the government, sends measure to Trump for his signature
Source: Washington Post
Congress sent legislation to President Trump on Friday to temporarily reopen the government, ending the longest shutdown in history while handing Democrats a major political victory in the protracted standoff.
The House unanimously approved the bill hours after the Senate backed the measure by voice vote. Trump was expected to sign the bill into law.
The pact, announced by Trump from the Rose Garden at the White House, would reopen shuttered government departments for three weeks while leaving the issue of $5.7 billion for a U.S.-Mexico border wall to further talks. Trump said that a congressional conference committee would spend the next three weeks working in a bipartisan fashion to come up with a border security package.
If a fair deal does not emerge by Feb. 15, Trump said, there could be another government shutdown or he could declare a national emergency, a move that could allow him to direct the military to build the wall without congressional consent. Such an action would likely face an immediate legal challenge.

(130,043 posts)I think that is why the House "dispensed with the reading" and the debate and just did a motion to agree to the bill (without objection), so like a unanimous consent. That's the fastest way to get it it to him without people like Miller or Limpballs or Coultergeist interfering.

(1,279 posts)I don't think he will try another shutdown, but he probably will declare an emergency. I don't care if he does, because with all the court cases from owners of the properties he needs to all the environmental issues which will also go to court, it will take years before any real work can be done and the first Democrat elected President or with luck Pelosi will be President in a month or two.

(130,043 posts)I remember back when (R) Bob Bennett was running for re-election in Utah and he was targeted and primaried by the teabaggers who installed Mike Lee in that seat. He had been in office for 3 terms and was summarily removed as a warning. That helped to push the already RW Orin Hatch, off the RW cliff into insanity. Republican after Republican was eventually booted - including big names like Eric Cantor - and replaced with the loons. That put the fear into whoever was left.
Drumpf is the personification and voice of teabaggery and they obey (for the most part).
