Trump rips into Fox News over shutdown, border wall coverage
Source: The Hill
President Trump on Sunday blasted a pair of Fox News reporters over their coverage of the border wall negotiations, claiming that they have "less understanding" than journalists at "fake news CNN & NBC."
"Never thought Id say this but I think [John Roberts] and [Gillian Turner] have even less understanding of the Wall negotiations than the folks at FAKE NEWS CNN & NBC!" Trump tweeted, referring to two of the news network's top correspondents.
"Look to final results! Dont know how my poll numbers are so good, especially up 19% with Hispanics?"
It is unclear what specific coverage Trump was referring to. Roberts filled in for Fox News anchor Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday." Fox News did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

(10,950 posts)I haven't read it all, so this is what I've gleaned from the part I read --
NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll National Adults. Interviews conducted January 10th through January 13th, 2019, n=1023 MOE +/- 3.8 percentage points.
National Registered Voters: 873 MOE +/- 4.2 percentage points.
15% of the former and 14% of the latter are "Latino". I think the job approval numbers are from the "National Adults" so 15% * 1023 = 153 sample size for Latinos. Not a large sample.

(65,427 posts)...I'd be very worried about dirty data if I was at Marist.
A 60%+ relative change in one polling period is highly aberrative.

(3,402 posts)It wasnt a poll exclusively of Latin people, thus the margin of error is rather large (about 10%) since only about 15% of the population is Latino. The disapproval rate among Latinos was 46%, so, given the margin of error, he could have been -16% with this demographic. Only 27% of Latin people polled said they would definitely vote for him. 58% said they wouldnt. Yet this was the one thing he chose to cherry pick from a poll that was not complimentary to him at all.

And we all know the problem LICHes have with cooperation from the old bumper sticker:

(11,885 posts)Trying to bully others to spread his propaganda or he attacks them, now even Fox. HE has no intentions of agreeing to anything they were to get , and the democrats shouldn't offer anything to him, because he'll refuse it, and he doesn't keep his deals anyway. He always finds loopholes to undermine , plus his time I think is getting very close. Is he and his lawyers already talking to Mueller about a deal to resign, more than likely. Democrats should ignore him, and any deal, and let him wallow in another shut down disaster. It'll only help more Democrats defeat Republicans in 2020 election, especially for President after he resigns.

On last weekend's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, Adam Burke had a great one-liner about how Individual-1's letterhead should read "From the toilet of..." I'm guessing that was the case with this and other tweets. Many, many other tweets.)
So we see what was occupying his tiny, little, warped mind yesterday. Of all the tweets he excreted there was no mention of the Holocaust Remembrance Day. The White House did issue a statement that was well written -- no misspellings, no fragment sentences, Caps Lock remained off. Clearly, it was written by a staff member. Melanoma at least visited the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Alone.
How typical!

(14,180 posts)I had a long aggressive back and forth with a Latino gentleman on some YouTube thread (I know...me?!)
He was a Trump supporter and was angry about, in his estimation, too many from Latin countries coming in through the back door. And are also probably of the less progressive variety. He supported Trump's statement about letting murderers and rapists in. He was from some other Latin country not Mexico. But there are a lot of Latino folks, most of them, that are legal and pay taxes etc...and they resent others from Latino countries sneaking in, and causing trouble, been convinced of that. Putting heat on their communities unfairly, those who did things the legal correct way. Just saying. This is something Democrats should be aware of.

(12,700 posts)Spanish Land Grant Hispanics (U.S. Citizens) have historically had issues with the families of immigrant Central Americans who come up to work, whether or not they became naturalized over the decades - more of a class issue than cultural, from what I have seen.
Second and third generation of Hispanics whose parents and grandparents were "naturalized" or granted amnesty have issues with modern immigrants and border crossers coming over for asylum or working to send money back home.
But the primary issue that everyone seems to have is based on the fact the there are too many U.S. employers - Anglo and Latino (along with other U.S. citizen "cultural identities" ) that are willing to exploit Central and South Americans coming up because labor is a major cost driver for most businesses.
It's not so much the process or the "correct, legal" way to come up is causing resentment, it's the fact that in areas that are within 100 miles of the border, small businesses that usually provide the "first good jobs" for semi-skilled labor/high school graduates (typically construction, agricultural, landscape, warehouse and delivery, facility maintenance, minor handyman/repair, caretaker type work) are hiring undocumented workers or recent immigrants on work visas to do those jobs - rather than the high school graduate who usually can't find work other than retail to get a start in.
These businesses will claim they don't have the cushion to train and pay semi-skilled citizens living or equivalent to union wages, so they'll pay non-citizens shit wages and barter the rest of the compensation for that same semi-skilled labor that would be willing to put up with any hardship, and hope ICE or BPS doesn't raid them any time soon. On top of that, to the employer, these "employees" are pretty much interchangeable and disposable.
I've seen a lot of small Latino businesses hire the very same undocumented workers they complain about rather than their own neighbor's kids; the assumption appears to be that either kids growing up in the U.S. are either too good to work janitorial or warehouse and should be going to college, or are slacker/losers that can't be trusted with a job. "Undocumenteds are taking our jobs and impoverishing our communities" - bullshit. The employers are cheap, and don't want to pay living wages.
My slightly autistic nephew, living out in the county up near Dallas Ft. Worth, was outstanding in FFA and is currently pursuing an AS degree/Certificate in a Large Animal Veterinary/Husbandry program out of U of Texas.
If it weren't for a former HS classmate whose father runs an Angus ranch and is doing him a favor letting him exercise horses and muck out stalls instead of hiring one of the many seasonal Mexican immigrants to do the job for the next year, his only part-time job options to support him while he's going to college would be pretty much dead-end retail or food service - and that's only if he could beat out prettier looking, more personable guys and gals for those jobs.
And he's still not getting paid minimum wage for his hours worked - he's getting paid under the table whatever the ranch can afford to pay him - according to the owner of the ranch.
Again, that rancher, and the other ranchers, or construction firm owners, or mechanics, or local commodities distributers are turning down U.S. born workers who expect to be treated with respect, dignity, and fairness in favor of a workforce they don't have to pay as much and can just let go once they got what they wanted out of the worker.
You want to get rid of undocumented immigrants and the resentment towards them? Make it more painful for these small time employers or sub-contractors to be attracting undocumented workers, and more beneficial (tax deductions) to hire local workers at decent wages.

(14,180 posts)I think Democrats might be in danger of counting on the Latino community, and their votes, not wanting the wall, not willing to turn their backs on fellow Latinos. Democrats may have to make up the deficit of a growing number of Latino American business owners, and just others who have gone by the book to be in America, going along with Trump's "national emergency" rationale and fear mongering. We must remember that most are from a conservative religious upbringing as well.
