South Dakota legislature votes to allow concealed handguns without a permit

Source: The Hill

The South Dakota legislature has passed a bill allowing residents to carry concealed handguns without a permit, sending the measure to Gov. Kristi Noem (R) for a signature.

The state House passed the Senate legislation in a 47-23 vote on Tuesday to allow for the so-called “constitutional carry,” The Argus Leader reported.

Noem has vocalized support for the measure before but said she will consider the language in the bill before signing it into law.

State Rep. Lee Qualm (R), a bill sponsor, told the newspaper that the measure was “simple” because it repealed the concealed carry permit requirements.

The article goes on to cite a poll showing more than 80% of South Dakotans, including more than 80% of the Trump supporters there, support keeping their current requirements on concealed carry, NOT changing to permit-less concealed carry.

1. I definitely support having a permit. And "open carry" is for suckers.

9 out of 10 open carry folks that I see just look like they're trying to be the tough guy.
But if anyone wants to do something to someone openly carrying, the first thing they'd do is grab the gun. And they'd have the jump on you.

their big hardware that can't be worn under clothing.

Thing is, the only time anyone should open-carry a weapon is when it's legitimately in use. Zombie invasion. Those times you're not going to be prosecuted for displaying it.

A firearm is a deadly weapon and not a fashion accessory.

2. Insane. What real world problem were they trying to solve?

Republicans seem to work hard when it comes to issues that don't solve any real problems. This one, in my opinion, will only create more. I will be avoiding South Dakota (I'm sure they won't miss me) since they care more about their wild, wild west fantasies than people's lives.

I hope the voters are reminded which party changed these laws. That said, I would never set foot in South Dakota and once wanted to visit Mt. Rushmore but not anymore. I hope their tourism industry gets destroyed. Who wants to go to a state where you can get killed by someone who does not have a background check or a permit to own a gun.

Do you think people with plans to rob and murder others have, up to this point, avoided doing so in South Dakota because carrying concealed handguns has been illegal without a state license?
Now that the license is no longer necessary to make carrying pistols legal, do you anticipate soon-to-be murderers exercising their carry rights and legally carrying guns to the scenes of the murders they’ll finally be able to commit?

5. Idaho has this, and it hasn't increased the gun problem we have

One very large issue with constitutional carry, that the promoters of this BS never quite get around to telling their fans: if you plan to cross the state line with a concealed weapon, you need a CCL with reciprocity between states because constitutional carry is only valid intrastate. Since most concealed weapons bearers do plan to cross the state line and won't take the precious off when they do, the issuance of gun permits continues as before.

No gun owner will tell you this: why in all the states that are supposedly ultra-safe, like Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas, do so many people prefer to walk around like they're fixin' ta go on patrol in Afghanistan or something?

I'm pro-gun but I fail to see the evil in requiring someone who carries to pass background and safety checks. Is it to give criminals who can pass neither a chance to carry a pistol in their pocket?

That must describe their perceived base.

9. Nothing at all wrong with it. These folks just push the "constitutional right" aspect.

Trying to say that they don't NEED a permit because its their RIGHT. UGH.
I say quit giving the total ban folks yet another arrow in the quiver.
