Exclusive: Foxconn reconsidering plans to make LCD panels at Wisconsin plant

(Reuters) - Foxconn Technology Group is reconsidering plans to make advanced liquid crystal display panels at a $10 billion Wisconsin campus, and said it intends to hire mostly engineers and researchers rather than the manufacturing workforce the project originally promised.

Announced at a White House ceremony in 2017, the 20-million square foot campus marked the largest greenfield investment by a foreign-based company in U.S. history and was praised by President Donald Trump as proof of his ability to revive American manufacturing.

Foxconn, which received controversial state and local incentives for the project, initially planned to manufacture advanced large screen displays for TVs and other consumer and professional products at the facility, which is under construction. It later said it would build smaller LCD screens instead.

Now, those plans may be scaled back or even shelved, Louis Woo, special assistant to Foxconn Chief Executive Terry Gou, told Reuters. He said the company was still evaluating options for Wisconsin, but cited the steep cost of making advanced TV screens in the United States, where labor expenses are comparatively high.

Foxconn already had a reputation for making promises, getting incentives, and then pulling out with the "labor expenses are comparatively high" excuse!!!

OK, I admit its a bit juvenile and over the top with innuendo...but the intent to agitate Trump and make him irrational about perceived slights to his virility.

That's the definition of a successful campaign ad. Distill complexity down to a few, short points and make them catchy and easy to remember. Over the top and juicy innuendo doesn't hurt either.

they will build an engineering center which only employs college grads. Word is they can't afford to hire low skilled people and pay them a living wage. If anything is built it will only employ 1,000 people tops.

They kissed ASS and coddled Boeing for decades and not long after confirming that the new tanker would be built in Wichita, they announce they were LEAVING for cheaper labor.

They've kissed ass on other industry coming in and rarely asked questions, just threw money at them and then watched them leave years later.

which are better and more scratch / crack resistant. The iPhone XR is the only newer iPhone that still uses LCD screens, and Apple just announced it's going to use OLED screens exclusively in the future.

They're replaced by LED which changes the way the screen is backlit. LED TV's and smaller monitors will be with us for years to come.In fact I wonder if that's what they meant in the article?

Republican leaders of the state Legislature are blaming Democratic Gov. Tony Evers for Foxconn's reported decision to consider dropping its plans to build an LCD panel manufacturing facility in Racine County

. . .

"We don’t blame Foxconn for altering plans in an ever-changing technology business. It’s also not surprising Foxconn would rethink building a manufacturing plant in Wisconsin under the Evers Administration," Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said in a joint statement about the company's plans.

. . .

"Governor Evers has an anti-jobs agenda and pledged to do away with a successful business incentive for manufacturing and agriculture," Fitzgerald and Vos said, referring to Evers' proposal to pay for a middle-class tax cut by scaling back a tax credit for manufacturers and agriculture producers.
