'Life-threatening' temperatures hit record daily low in Chicago

Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Temperatures fell early Wednesday to make it the coldest Jan. 30 in Chicago on record.

By 4 a.m., it was already minus 19 degrees, which beats the last record daily low of minus 15 on Jan. 30, 1966, the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures will continue to fall throughout Wednesday, possibly reaching between minus 20 and minus 28 degrees, the weather service said.

The windchill will reach “extremely dangerous” levels of 50 to 55 degrees below zero, the weather service is forecasting.

but just about everything, including entire small municipalities, are closed tonight and tomorrow. I do not think there is a public, private or parochial school/school district that will be open on Thursday from Erie to Uniontown.

PLEASE don't go out if you don't have to, and if you MUST, layers work. Nylons, then long johns, then lined jeans or pants. Tank tops (silk if available) then t-shirt, then flannel shirt, then turtleneck, then sweater. Heaviest coat you have. If you don't have one arctic rated, wear 2 of them. First soft boots, overlayer of heavy boots.

TWO layers of gloves, minimum.

Take care to get inside FAST.

Schools were closed, no mail delivery.

But, the trash was picked up, and the newspaper delivered.

My trash pickup could have been delayed with no impact, and the newspaper is optional - I can read DU to find out what's happening in the world.

I think I have some beer in the garage. I'd better check it before the thaw, I'm sure the containers have probably burst. Sad.

I went grocery shopping around 1030 and it was still VERY angry outside.
Took dog out to back yard around 20 minutes ago and it was very obviously less bitter cold.
Probably still around zero now, but compared to -22, it's much more tolerable.
Weird thing is they're calling for 55 on Monday, so a 77 degree change in temps in 5 days.
Like being 25 on Monday and 102 on Friday.
But, there's no climate change or anything!!
