DOE secretly shipped plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy disclosed Wednesday that it has already shipped weapons-grade plutonium from South Carolina to a nuclear security site in Nevada despite the state’s protests.

The Justice Department notified a federal judge in Reno that the government trucked in half of the radioactive material that it intends to store at the site 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Las Vegas. Nevada had filed a request for an injunction to block the move in November.

Department lawyers said in a nine-page filing that the previously classified information about the shipment from South Carolina can be disclosed now because enough time has passed to protect national security. They didn’t specify when the one-half metric ton of plutonium was transferred.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak said he’s “beyond outraged by this completely unacceptable deception.” He said he’s working with Nevada’s congressional delegation to fight back against the U.S. government’s “reckless disregard” for the safety of Nevadans.

You know, if this stuff was 238 I’d be pretty excited. Plutonium 238 is used to make RTGs, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators, also known as plutonium batteries. They power the electronics in deep space missions like New Horizons, which took pics of Ultima Thule. It’s worth $8m per kilo, so that load would be worth four billion. But no, it’s probably just stupid weapons grade crap.

The place of origin is the DOE Savannah River Site located between Georgia & Carolina on the Savannah river. The use of special trucks with US government plates with snipers in SUV to guard trucks. The transport of material has been routine since the 80's. I have been to this place which polluted the river (no fishing because the fish are toxic.) I have also been to Nevada Test Site (NTS) (area 51 is part of NTS.) Both areas require "Q" clearance which is above top secret....
