U.S. says no evidence foreign meddling impacted 2018 election

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top U.S. officials said on Tuesday that foreign actors did not significantly influence the 2018 congressional elections, despite reports of hacking attempts leading up to the November election.

The statement by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security stands in contrast to the 2016 presidential election, which U.S. officials say was the target of a sophisticated Russian hacking and propaganda campaign.

The two agencies said the U.S. government has found no evidence that foreign governments or agents had an impact last November, when Democrats won control of the House of Representatives. Neither political campaigns nor electronic voting machines or other infrastructure was significantly affected, they said in a joint statement. They declined to provide further detail.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, which works to elect Republican candidates, said it was the target of a hacking attempt last year.

flip just a few votes in just a few battleground states and you've changed the outcome for the most powerful office in the world.

but to change the outcome of the house of representatives, you'd have to meddle in dozens of districts to flip enough seats to affect the overall control of the house.

the senate was closer, but still, you're talking about as much work as in a presidential election but the reward is only flipping one house of congress rather than the entire executive branch.

that's not to say they didn't meddle, i'm not in a position to know.

what i do think they almost surely did was testing and research for the next presidential election, which they surely intend to rig.

there was no proof of hacking voter machines and flipping votes. No machines are ever pulled out and independently audited. The machine owners claim proprietary rights on their software, you know, their sophisticated software where 1 + 1 = 1 for me and 1 for you.

yes-men who have no hesitation in signing off any glorified whitepaper that exonerates Trump. They hope some officious looking documents will be enough to remove any casts a suspicion on his legitimate right to claim the office of the presidency.

"If just 40,000 people across Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania had changed their minds, I would have won," Clinton wrote. "With a margin like that, everyone can have a pet theory about why I lost. It's difficult to rule anything out. But every theory needs to be tested against the evidence that I was winning until October 28, when [former FBI Director] Jim Comey injected emails back into the election." - Hillary Clinton
