Yearbook Staffer Says Governor Northam Likely Knew About Racist Photo

3:54 PM. RICHMOND, Va.-- As Virginia's governor struggles to explain how a racist photo ended up on his personal yearbook page, a yearbook staff member said each student had control over such pictures. Dr. William Elwood worked with others on the layout for the Eastern Virginia Medical School's 1984 yearbook-- the same yearbook that featured a photo of a person in blackface and another person in a Ku Klux Klan outfit on Ralph Northam's personal page.

Elwood said photos for personal pages "were chosen by the individual student." "They were submitted in a sealed envelope with their name on it to be put on their page," Elwood told CNN. "The pictures for the personal ones were not just chosen at random from other pictures that might have been available at the time."

Elwood said it's possible someone other than Northam submitted the disturbing photo, but it seems unlikely. "Anything's possible, but the probability is low unless someone was out to get him and was able to access all this stuff," he said. "All of the stuff was kept in a locker room and the only time the room was unlocked was when somebody was in that room working on the yearbook."

He also said it's unlikely that staff members mixed up photos during production because "as far as I know, nobody complained that their picture was under the wrong person. " SEE VIDEO of Elwood.

It seems to me that offensive pictures should have been returned with a "sorry, we're not using this" note. This was the mid 1980s! What on earth were they printing decades prior to that?

Northam's Med School Banned Yearbooks In 2013 Due To Racist Photos

By Kate Riga

February 4, 2019 2:22 pm

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) medical school, Eastern Virginia Medical School, banned yearbooks in 2013 after the inclusion of photos showing students dressed like Confederate soldiers, according to a Monday Washington Post report.

The administration made that move nearly 30 years after the publication of the yearbook which includes photos of men dressed in blackface and a Ku Klux Klan robe on Northam’s page.

Provost Richard Homan said that the yearbooks had been produced with very minimal faculty oversight, and that he regrets not conducting an audit of past yearbooks after imposing the ban.

...cultural context at that school made this perfectly acceptable. Why would they stop these pictures when they've been worshiping the Confederate flag and "their heritage" almost up the present moment? Racism isn't even noticed by white people in a racist environment. It's received reality.

The whole school needs ot be investigated. The school, yearbook, yearbook editor need to account for themselves. They need to publicly arrange to look into the current mores of the school.

Would very much like to hear from the black students who went there at the time of this picture and that go there now. Wonder what's really going on at this place.

He said when he was in med school, he was simultaneously serving in the military. So he didn't have much free time, and when school ended, he was off in the military somewhere. He never looked at the yearbook and never bought it.

Was that on a "personal page"? What is a personal page?

He said he doesn't remember that, and didn't know about the photo. That sounds a little unbelievable to me. If someone told me there's a pic of me in blackface somewhere, I wouldn't have to think about it. I would know that can't be real, because I never did that. So whether he knew about the pic or not, it's clear he must have done either that or another time.

Whether he should resign is up to Virginia, IMO. All the Senators up in arms about a VA gov with this in his past, when they didn't say anything about Robert Byrd...they have no credibility and are just jumping on the bandwagon for politics. Whether the Lt. Gov should resign is also up to Virginia (the sex assault allegations).

These politicians are not national politicians and not leaders in the party. It's up to their state.

As you see from many posts here, in Gen. Discussion, accusations of sexual misconduct about Lt. Gov. Fairfax have recently resurfaced. If he's tied up, I don't know about the succession and procedure but there are posts here speculating what comes next. A mess. https://wjla.com/news/local/virginias-attorney-general-calls-for-gov-northam-to-step-down

having such a photo on your page and none of your school friends ever say anything to you about it over 35 years ... ?

And that you never look at the page?

and this from the article:

He also said it's unlikely that staff members mixed up photos during production because "as far as I know, nobody complained that their picture was under the wrong person."

And that no one ever complained?

The odds of all those things occurring are extraordinary slim.
