PHOENIX (AP) A long-term care facility in Arizona where an incapacitated woman was raped and later gave birth announced Thursday that it would shut down operations.
Officials with Hacienda HealthCare said its board of directors determined its not sustainable to keep operating its intermediate care facility in Phoenix. It serves infants, children and young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities who require a high level of medical care.
Hacienda officials said they were working with state agencies to develop a plan to move 37 patients to other centers. Its skilled nursing facility will stay open.
We will continue to work with these agencies in the weeks and months ahead to ensure an appropriate and safe transition moving forward, the provider said in a statement. The care of our patients remains our top priority and we will do everything in our power to ensure a smooth transition for them and their families.

(14,562 posts)The lack of care towards its patients was horrid. I worked in a facility like this. A female's period was kept track of and documented. patients were weighed religiously. To let a patient go into labor before they realized she was pregnant was a severe lack of care.
How else were they cutting corners?

(37,648 posts)Not only was the poor incapacitated woman repeatedly raped (I can't imagine her going through that over and over, with no one to help her). But then the facility staff don't even NOTICE that she's pregnant? How can that be? Did the administrator ever even go to the facility? Oversee operations?
Some people need to go to jail, besides just the rapist.

(8,292 posts)will not go into another nursing facility like that. She broke her ankle in 2000 and she had to go for about 5 weeks. She absolutely hated it.
She made a couple of friends there but she is so afraid of them.
She's 86 and would rather die than live in a nursing home. True story.
She has a DNR for that purpose.
