NARAL blasts Sinema for support of Trump judicial nominee
Source: Politico
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) came under fire Wednesday from an abortion rights group for her support of President Donald Trumps judicial nominee Michael Liburdi.
In remarks to the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, Sinema praised Liburdis credentials, describing the nominee as a well-respected attorney and noting his role as general counsel for Republican Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. Sinema added that while she did not share all of the same political beliefs as Liburdi, he was still professionally qualified" for the role.
Trump nominated Liburdi to become a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona in January.
But Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, blasted Sinema for her support of Liburdi, calling it beyond troubling. The group highlighted Liburdis role as chairman of the Arizona Right to Life PAC as well as his work for Ducey, who signed a law last year that requires doctors ask women seeking an abortion the reason for their decision.

In response to Sen. Kyrsten Sinemas statements in support of anti-choice judicial nominee Michael Liburdi, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
Senator Sinema, like so many Democrats, was elected last year in large part due to a wave powered by women voters who wanted to put a check on this runaway Administration. So to use one of her first acts in office to help elevate a judge with a clear anti-choice record is beyond troubling.
Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and anti-choice activists are stacking the courts at a record pace with far right-wing judges that will strip away our rights and freedoms with the ultimate goal of gutting Roe v. Wade and criminalizing abortion.
Democratic Senators should be doing everything in their power to fight these efforts to stack courts against women and families. Senator Sinema says she knows this person and we should trust her judgement; however, actions speak louder than words and his actions have spoken volumes about where he stands on our fundamental reproductive freedoms.

(54,506 posts)Sinema didn't have to go this route. She isn't up for re-election for another 5 years. Who is she trying to please with this move? Certainly not the constituency that elected her?

I am so hoping that Mark Kelly can prevail there next year to start allowing her to shift back towards the left.
