'We now have an outbreak': 8 cases of measles confirmed in Vancouver

Source: CTV News

Vancouver health officials have identified eight cases of measles in the city in recent weeks.

Speaking at a news conference Friday afternoon, Vancouver Coastal Health's Dr. Althea Hayden said it was determined that all cases are associated with a single school.

"We now have an outbreak," she said.

Hayden said patients include staff, students and family members affiliated with cole Jules-Verne, a French-language secondary school.

Holy hell. Brought in from outside of North America so not related to the Washington/Oregon outbreak. Vaccinations should be mandatory or no attendance at school allowed.

On edit: This is Vancouver, British Columbia. A short follow-up is below.

Unless of course the child has a compromised immune system. For those folks herd immunity protects them.

here in my town. These are the parents of his patients at his local practice. He is probably the best pediatrician in town. He is highly respected by his fellow physicians. Why the hell didn’t these parents just get the vaccinations when it was time to do so years ago?

After news of the recent outbreaks, parents who had not vaccinated their children for MMR, were coming into the clinic and requesting the MMR vaccine for their children. Better late than never.

Many are very well educated. That’s what astounds me. They make no use of their intellect and education.

I am a firm believer in science. My child is fully vaccinated for all childhood diseases. We each get the flu vaccine each year. I am looking forward to his receiving the HPV vaccine in a few years.

I had chickenpox as a child and have the scars to prove it. I also have a small pox scar.

My child will never get chickenpox or have a smallpox vaccine scar.

Science is awesome!

anti-vaxxer stance is a mile wide and an inch deep.

In times of outbreak, they rush their little darlings in to the clinic for their vaccines.

In other times though, when I tell them "Get your kids vaccinated, or get out!", they get them vaccinated.

You just have to drop the hammer on these twits.

accept children into their practice of the parents won't immunize.

Obviously those rare few who are immuno-compromised in some way and cannot be vaccinated, are exempt.

and people with measles are often just mildly sick meaning they are not too sick to travel and it is natural for measles immunity to wane over time which equals measle.

The best we can hope for from a public health standpoint is attempt 100% vaccination and then be vigilant about catching new cases and giving boosters when needed to prevent outbreaks.

Even if you vaccinate your own population, immunity wanes and then people from places that do not vaccinate can pass on the infection. Going to be very hard to eradicate measles.

Tribal cultures already have suspicions when outsiders come in and when this operation was made public, it made it that much more difficult to eradicate the final pockets of this scourge in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

to stop vaccinations.
They started in Ukraine during the invasion and last year, Ukraine had 53,000 more than half of all cases in Europe. I posted this the other day in GD and became so interested, I researched and wrote this week's column.
here's just one source on the subject.
https://www.newsweek.com/russian-trolls-promoted-anti-vaccination-propaganda-measles-outbreak-1332016
Facebook is now looking for ways to combat disinformation about vaccines being spread on its platform.

The measles virus has resurged in recent years as conspiracy theories about vaccinations have spread online. Most of the new measles cases were in Eastern European and Central Asian countries frequently targeted by Russian disinformation, including Ukraine, Georgia, Serbia, Romania, Moldova, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Measles was considered eliminated in the U.S. in 2000 because of vaccines against measles, mumps, and rubella. Nevertheless, cases have increased in the U.S. Public health professionals have called the disease a leading cause of death among children.

The World Health Organization has said that fear of vaccines has become one of the top threats to global health as previously eradicated diseases make a comeback.

“Vaccine hesitancy—the reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines—threatens to reverse progress made in tackling vaccine-preventable diseases. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways of avoiding disease—it currently prevents 2-3 million deaths a year, and a further 1.5 million could be avoided if global coverage of vaccinations improved,” a World Health Organization report reads. “Measles, for example, has seen a 30% increase in cases globally.”

but WHO.

Here's my column in advance - remember I'm allowed 350 words

Measles, Facebook and Russia seem like non sequiturs that shouldn’t be grouped in the same sentence; but horrifying enough, they all belong together.

According to the CDC, measles is the most infectious of all preventable diseases; being airborne, it can transmit with stunning efficacy each time an infected person exhales. Unlike the flu virus, which requires close proximity, the measles virus spreads over space and time.

Considered eradicated in the U.S. since 2000 because of vaccinations, WHO now fears a global comeback as measles cases have recently spiked 30% worldwide. Shockingly, they cite Russia’s worldwide vaccination disinformation campaign being spread through Facebook and other social media.

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2013, Russia used social media disinformation to create chaos and distrust of Ukrainian government policies, resulting in Ukraine’s Health Minister being stripped of authority; consequently, few children there are vaccinated today.

Ukraine has become Europe’s measles epicenter, reporting over 53,000 measles cases last year which was more than half of all the cases reported throughout Europe. Last week, they reported another 3000 cases.

Around the same time as the Ukrainian campaign, a disinformation campaign began in the U.S. In 2013, Rand Paul and Chris Christie both participated in an anti-vaccination campaign; but they were quickly forced to recant under scientific pressure. Jenny McCarthy became famous for pushing a debunked 1998 autism study, now parents are refusing their children’s vaccinations.
Unfettered on social media, Russian trolls masquerade as concerned ordinary Americans. By turning our constitutional free speech against us, they create distrust in our health policies and uncertainty throughout our society.

Last week, Washington State declared a statewide emergency after reporting 58 cases statewide. Ten other states and Canada are also reporting outbreaks. Two weeks before the measles symptoms even appear, the virus is spreading, lingering in unventilated airspace for 2 hours after an infected person leaves. When an unvaccinated person enters that space, they become infected carriers. Repeat that with each person entering and exiting that same contaminated airspace, and that’s how epidemics occur.

To survive in the Digital-Age, our critical thinking skills will be paramount.

Measles outbreak: 33 students at 2 Vancouver schools ordered to stay home

Vancouver Coastal Health says 33 students at two French language schools in Vancouver have been ordered to stay home because they haven’t provided proof of measles vaccination.

There have been eight confirmed cases of measles at Ecole Secondaire Jules-Verne and Ecole Rose-Des-Vents.
