Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the Munich Security Conference and was met with some awkward silence when sending greetings from President Donald Trump.
-snip-
On Friday Pence spoke at the inaugural John McCain Dissertation Award Ceremony, in a speech that praised and paid tribute to the life and legacy of the late senator John McCain.
The audience applauded towards the beginning of his speech when the vice president said, I especially want to invite all of you to thank Senator Lindsey Graham for leading this delegation. Moments later, Pence said, I bring greetings from the 45h President of the United States of America, President Donald Trump.
This was met with silence in the room.

I'm also dead-sure Pence thinks he's doing his god's will......

Its Gods will. This guys behavior suggests he thinks he personally holds a franchise on that - that hes doing Gods will or is an instrument of Gods will.

(12,448 posts)It's really embarrassing when someone pauses for what's normally an applause line, and...silence. I don't understand why they applauded for Lindsey Graham, but maybe they weren't familiar with him and his Pence-like adoration of Donald Trump.

In a blunt reference to President Trump, he said: "Leadership in the absence of people who are with you is not leadership." He spoke of a "struggle for America's soul".

There are, if you like, two Americas here in Munich represented by the current and former vice-presidents. The Europeans are nostalgic for one and remain deeply uncomfortable with the other.

(4,292 posts)Having a few family members and many friends in Europe, this shameful person does not speak for me. Nor for many (most?) other USA citizens.
That said (written), most of my kith and kin on that continent understand, if somewhat puzzled by how our nation could have descended to Hell's gates so swiftly. What bewilders them is how we allow this travesty to continue. We joke about my option of moving into their dog house or wine cellar should I decide to expatriate myself. That joke has worn itself out. Me? I'd be OK in a really nice wine cellar. Once I become fluent in their language. Which I'm willing to do.
Post the declaration of a "national emergency," I pose to others here: what's the trigger to get me to pull up stakes here and expatriate? Asking on behalf of a par-boiled frog friend of mine.

(16,818 posts)But I do envy your having options. Let's hope it doesn't come to that, but save some spots in the wine cellar should it happen. There are so many good people here, wondering the same that may need all the help they can get. Please tell your relatives that we have been taken over by religious, [power-consumed zealots who want to destroy the idea of America and what it stands for. They have seen it before, perhaps they will understand that we are not immune.

Border Wall: Donald Trump will declare a national emergency
Donald Trump is winning little applause in Europe. Literally.
On Friday, world leaders and country representatives gathered for the annual Munich Security Conference in Germany.
In addition to handshakes, exchanged pleasantries and speeches from world leaders, we were treated to some rather awkward footage of Mike Pence and Ivanka Trump.
The Vice President gave a speech representing the US but things took an icy turn when he brought up Mr Trump.
To all of you, I bring greetings from a great champion of freedom and of strong national defence, who must work with these members of Congress to strengthen Americas military might and strengthen the leadership of the free world, Mr Pence said. I bring greetings from the 45th president of the United States of America, President Donald Trump.
At this, there was a complete silence from the crowd. In the footage, Mr Pence waits expectantly his head down for several painful seconds of silence, before he moves on:
You might dismiss this as a simple gesture of listening politely.
But consider this stark contrast: German Chancellor Angela Merkel received a standing ovation after she gave a speech that repeatedly criticised US foreign policy.
In the speech, before 30 heads of government and 90 ministers, Ms Merkel resisted Mr Pences calls to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, and criticised the US decision to withdraw its troops from Syria.......
