Scoop: Senate Intel subpoenas Trump Jr. over Russia matters

Source: Axios

The Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed Donald Trump Jr. to answer questions about his previous testimony before Senate investigators in relation to the Russia investigation, sources with direct knowledge told Axios.

Why it matters: It's the first congressional subpoena — that we know about — of one of President Trump's children. The subpoena sets up a fight that's unprecedented in the Trump era: A Republican committee chair pit against the Republican president's eldest son.

It's also a sign that the Russia investigations in Congress aren't over despite the conclusion of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe and despite Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying it's time to move on from the Russia probe.

A Senate Intelligence Committee spokesperson told Axios: "We do not discuss the details of witness engagements with the Committee. Throughout the investigation, the Committee has reserved the right to recall witnesses for additional testimony as needed, as every witness and witness counsel has been made aware."

Repub Senators just want to dump massive praise on him rather than asking any questions.
If they ask any questions, they will be all softballs and cotton candy fluffy ones......

Then they will all have a round of patty-cake among them....(socially acceptable form of circle jerk.....)

Then adjourn, all saying nothing here, everything's over......

Jr. is in a pickle because he can't just respond to Republican subpoenas. He would have a difficult time defending a contempt charge.

If he testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee, then a Court might be less likely to make him appear before the House on the same subject matter?

Senate Intel report will be released sometime in August....

Burr said this week that his panel won’t be releasing its ‘Trump-Russia’ investigation report until August. Senator Burr told reporters in Durham that his committee still has “several individuals” left to interview ...North Carolina, Burr??? GOTV

Trump wants this wrapped up, as does McConnell.

It's no accident that McConnell issues his "CASE CLOSED" statement the same week that the Senate Intel Committee subpoenas Trump Jr. for the Russia matters for its report.

Good strategy, from their viewpoint. Their Senate report will hopefully overshadow and put to rest the parts of the Mueller Report that involve the Trump family.

I had thought he was more balanced, until the truth was revealed.

He's on the Trump payroll, so to speak.

If you notice, the Senate Intel Committee hasn't done much.

You know the GOP majority will try to whitewash and coverup and declare a closure to every Trump crime. The display today in the House was sickening. They are so corrupt.

Washington (CNN)The Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed Donald Trump Jr. for him to return and testify again, and the committee is now at a standoff with Trump's eldest son, according to sources familiar with the matter.

One option Trump Jr. is considering in response to the subpoena is to invoke his Fifth Amendment rights, and another is just to not appear at all, according to one source.

Discussions for Trump Jr's testimony began several weeks ago before the Mueller report was released, the sources say. Trump Jr.'s team resisted giving testimony, in part, because the findings of the Mueller report were still not known.

During the negotiations, the idea to use written questions and answers was floated, and at another time it was proposed that Trump Jr. sit for an untranscribed interview, according to one source.

Donald Trump Jr. subpoenaed by Senate Intelligence Committee for further testimony on Trump campaign’s Russia contacts

By Washington Post Staff
May 8 at 5:13 PM

Lawmakers want to speak with President Trump’s son for a second time in their ongoing probe of Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Trump Jr. is said to be “exasperated” with the summons, according to a person familiar with the matter.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

What strategy, I don't know. But going by past behavior by Republicans in the Senate, this is part of a strategy to save Don Jr.

Just taking a guess: They fear a Court may require him to testify. But if he has already testified under oath before the Senate Intelligence Committee, maybe the Court would not require him to testify before the House.

OR...getting his lies on record, and then the Intelligence Committee declares his lies are truth?

With Junior under subpoena to the Senate, he can't testify to any other investigations. The Senate just keeps him under subpoena for the next year, preventing him from testifying to the House.
