New Jersey will ask voters to legalize recreational pot

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A measure to legalize recreational marijuana in New Jersey fizzled out Wednesday when the state Senate president said he would instead look to voters next year and will pursue separate bills to expand medical cannabis and wipe clean some criminal records.

Democrat Steve Sweeney vowed that adult-use marijuana — supported by fellow Democrats Gov. Phil Murphy and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin — would become legal, just not now.

This is the latest development as New Jersey sought to become the 11th state to legalize recreational weed since a vote on the measure was postponed in March . Sweeney said at the time that the bill didn’t have enough votes to pass.

Murphy campaigned on recreational cannabis legalization and pushed hard for the bill. He has said he would consider a referendum but didn’t want to abandon legislation.

"Reefer Madness" or just crooked politicians couldn't figure out how to get their hands in the till. Big pharma has many legislators on the payroll and will have a well financed media blitz to convince the voters that cannabis legalization will cause their daughters to fall under the spell of a the reefer man and start selling their bodies for dope money. It worked in 1932, for William Randolph Hearst, and they're banking on it working again.
How many more lives will prohibition ruin before the scourge of cannabis criminality is stricken from the landscape? We are going to need an all out effort to combat big pharma's unwarranted influence over our lives.
The real crime associated with cannabis is ruining lives and families to protect the profits of the already inordinately wealthy.
