LONDON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union will not renegotiate the Brexit deal that Prime Minister Theresa May agreed, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Tuesday, as concerns grew that a successor to May could trigger a confrontation with the bloc.
Brexit is up in the air after May announced plans to step down, triggering a leadership contest in the ruling Conservative Party that could bring a new prime minister to power who wants a much more decisive break with the EU.
One of the candidates, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said it would be political suicide to pursue a no-deal Brexit, a reprimand to frontrunner Boris Johnson who said last week that Britain should leave with or without a deal by the end of October.
Hunt, who voted to stay in the EU in the 2016 referendum but now accepts Brexit, said he would try for a new agreement that would take Britain out of the EU customs union while respecting legitimate concerns around the Irish border.

The EU, though, said there would be no renegotiation.
I will have a short meeting with Theresa May, but I was crystal clear: There will be no renegotiation, Juncker said before a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said he believed the risk of Britain crashing out of the bloc without any divorce agreement was growing.

(62,540 posts)but it appears that GB has doubled down in stupidity.
If I were the EU, I would just say, "you want out? there is the door, you may leave right now, this moment. Oh you won't? we will help you. As of the first of June, you are done. you are no longer a member of the EU. have fun on the bread lines".

against Brexit. I think the UK is making a mistake. I thought the separation could be worked out to make it easier... and even hoped for a new vote (I believe the outcome would very likely be different). Alas, there was nobody with the leadership skills to guide the country... and now, after all this, I wouldn't blame the EU for just kicking the UK out... and, I would not make it easy for them to rejoin, either.

(62,540 posts)I predict with in 6 months of leaving the EU, GB will be wanting to renegotiate their membership back in.
it will take at least 6 months for it to sink in regarding just how colossally stupid it was to leave in the first place.
but more over, the EU should make them feel the pain, like a very slow and painfully gradual relaxing of the tariffs and export taxes. this way, what pro-brexit tories are still left defending their stupid decision a that point will be nothing more than a point of ridicule.

(55,445 posts)There's just too many brown people in the country for the tastes of some people...
So some ethnic scapegoating, a bunch of wild-assed impossible have-their-cake-and-eat-it-too promises and the refusal of sane minded people to take the threat seriously and get off their asses and VOTE (sound familiar?) has led them where they are now.

(3,172 posts)I don't think a lot of people on here grasp either why Trump got as many votes as he did nor Brexit, and for the same reasons. Folks aren't connecting the dots between Trump and Brexit and Australia, and Italy, and Hungary; it's all part of the same phenomena, and that teapot was very much a symbol and a harbinger.
A lot of people feel that the *only* entity that should make any sort of rule, law or regulation effecting what goes in in a country should be the government of that country, not the EU, not the UN.
Lots of family and some friends who are Trump and/or Brexit supporters. Nationalism is real, any government ignores it at its peril. Be it borders or trade, there's a huge, instinctive backlash when some outside entity says 'you must do/not do this'; right or wrong, good or bad, something like a government in another country or an international organization TELLING the citizens of a nation will arouse a reaction that people with an internationalist, egalitarian and 'citizen of the world' viewpoint are shocked by.
So I wasn't at all surprised by either Trump's win nor Brexit. And the world hasn't begun to see the crest of nationalism, and won't for another 20-30 years. Just a cynical observation by a very pessimistic progressive.
Maybe I'm wrong, I hope so.

(55,445 posts)And please DO NOT start with the "You people don't understand how Trump *really* came to power..." bullshit because it insults my intelligence. The average Trump-voting yokel couldn't tell you the true role of the United Nations even with a gun to his head.
The fact of the matter if Britions hated the EU that much they would have left three years ago with no deal, but they want/need all the economic benefits of the common market but don't want the immigration/freedom of movement. Farage and Johnson promised everyone they could divorce their collective wife (EU) and leave her to worry about the kids (migrants), but they'd still get the sex (economic trade) whenever they wanted it...
All that other stuff about rule of law is mostly window dressing and when you dig deeper into that argument you'll see it always comes back to immigration sooner or later.

(14,180 posts)Add to that Russian interference the first time? The fake predictions about saving money by the Brexit side?
Why is there no party that is fully onboard with the re-vote position as their main platform? Maybe there is, I'm not too well versed in UK politics. But it seems like Labour wants their bread buttered on both sides, and is afraid to choose sides. And the Tories are just lost. They created the whole mess, and have no credibility left on the matter.

(13,083 posts)which IMO should be the case. They've wanted to break away from UK for far too long, especially the Scots. The devolution of powers does not give these 2 countries a voice in their own governance, as ultimately UK Parliament trumps their own Parliaments' decisions.

(6,415 posts)...and rejoin Ireland. The demographics alone give it that. But with a possible Scotland and Welsh break away, yeah, shit is going to hit the fan. How does England stop this breakaway? By force? Not a good idea, because the military is comprised of English, Scottish and Welsh. But it does become a weaker country and economy if they allow it to happen...but if they do go desperate, and sadly, I can't rule that out...
...and a civil war happens, during this mess, whats to stop Spain invading and taking Gibraltar? Argentina taking another gambit at the Falklands?...who will no doubt suddenly have up to date Russian military hardware.

(7,575 posts)people did not understand the consequences of leaving. Now, they can see the irreconcilable problems. But I've heard no one (of the leaders) suggest this is remotely going to happen.
