As Tensions With Iran Escalated, Trump Opted for Most Extreme Measure

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — In the chaotic days leading to the death of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, Iran’s most powerful commander, top American military officials put the option of killing him — which they viewed as the most extreme response to recent Iranian-led violence in Iraq — on the menu they presented to President Trump.

They didn’t think he would take it. In the wars waged since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Pentagon officials have often offered improbable options to presidents to make other possibilities appear more palatable.

After initially rejecting the Suleimani option on Dec. 28 and authorizing airstrikes on an Iranian-backed Shia militia group instead, a few days later Mr. Trump watched, fuming, as television reports showed Iranian-backed attacks on the American Embassy in Baghdad, according to Defense Department and administration officials.

By late Thursday, the president had gone for the extreme option. Top Pentagon officials were stunned.

under a rock the last 3 years, and have never heard of Donald Trump. He will always pick the most harebrained, stupid, extreme option in any multiple choice list. He's not known for his subtlety.

If Trump tells these same Pentagon officials to bomb or destroy the 52 Iranian targets he tweeted about today, many central to their culture, will these Pentagon officials just carry out his orders? G-d help us.

To use to direct attention away from impeachment , to make a lot more in profits from the much much higher oil prices, and for stock markets manipulation profits. This threat was fake news from trump and others in position to know are exposing them for doing this now. This is backfiring on Putin, trump, and the GOP , and exposing again the level of corruption they're involved in. The American people are running from trump and Putin and the GOP even faster now.

Trump is irrational, and military leaders who presented this option to him should be replaced for dereliction of duty. Anyone who has been paying attention during the last three years should know by now that Trump sees himself as a strongman dictator and will do whatever makes him appear strong. It was utterly stupid to offer an option to illegally assassinate a top leader of a country when we are not at war with that country. By now, the military should have learned that Trump has to be managed. Unless the war hawks did it deliberately? Part of the military has wanted to attack Iran for decades.

There are 80 million people in Iran. We couldn't control Iraq who's population was less than half of that during the Gulf War II. What are we going to do, invade them? This attack is only going to uniteIranian behind their government and force the Iraqi's to choose a side. Like the proverbial dog chasing cars, now that you got one, what are you going to do with it?

Our standing army is too small to engage with a country of this size. Sure we can blow things up but that's not going to buy us any leverage to make the Iranians stop trying to impose their will in the ME. Be better to invest our GDP into finding alternatives to fossil fuels and let the Wahhabi/Sunni House of Saud fight their own wars.

We would not welcome an army coming here, building bases, and taking over. Why should the Iranians and Iraquis? They know what is needed in their own countries, let them rule themselves. Besides, anyone with more than room temperature I.Q. can recognize that the US is no leader in ANYTHING. Look at who we elect, the corrupt gop and a bumbling idiot as president, along with his dumb family. Just heard there is an $80 million contract on tRump's giant orange head, plus members of his family. Too bad they did not stay out of politics. Their scams were working quite well, until daddy decided he could run for the WH.
