Trump will try to block Bolton impeachment testimony; Senate to get case next week, Pelosi says

President Trump said Friday he would invoke executive privilege to try to block his former national security advisor from testifying in a Senate impeachment trial as Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House will be prepared to move articles of impeachment to the Senate next week.
Trumps statement, in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, marked the first time he openly said he would try to block John Bolton from testifying if the Senate were to subpoena his former advisor.
I think you have to, for the sake of the office, he said when Ingraham asked if he would try to prevent such testimony.
Whether the Senate would have to accept an executive privilege claim in an impeachment trial is an issue thats never been resolved.
Trumps statement came as Pelosi signaled an end to a standoff between House Democrats and Senate Republicans that has delayed a Senate trial of the case.

(160,655 posts)so profoundly stupid as Trump, and try to put distance between them on HIS terms, not Trump's.
Whatever it is Bolton is, and it's not good, the one weakness he doesn't seem to indulge is looking up to anyone and it's possible the time has come to publicly rid himself of something as nasty as Trump, even though he is an unbearable All Star A-Hole himself.
I would love to see Bolton go rogue and blow up over Trump's filthy history he was forced to endure.

(14,907 posts)She said she asked {house whip - forgot name) to be ready to hold a vote next tuesday. She didn't say the vote would be on the managers, just sending over the articles.
So Tuesday they vote to send them over, then by the end of the week they arrive, but what about the managers? She will likely schedule a second vote the following week to name them.
Then the sotu happens. But unless moscow pushes to change the rules and hold an immediate vote, there is no way it will be done in time to finish before the sotu.
Which was her real goal. To have him run out of oxygen while giving the sotu and flying off in some rant.
He wouldn't be able to control himself. She would be right behind him burning a hole in his dimented ego.
Trump won't be able to set up his oxygen cannon in the podium like he does at the rallies. That's probably how he survives them - a constant blast of pure oxygen blowing in his face.
So it's more of a game of chicken, with the sotu being the train.

(19,204 posts)they could pass all the laws and legislation you could think of, and Trump would declare himself above them all. But of course he's "totally innocent".

(1,915 posts)Pretend there are enough votes to call Bolton I mean probably not but just pretend. The Senate called Bolton the case gets sent to the Supreme Court, it takes 6 to 8 months to decide, but meanwhile that whole time the Senate won't be able to vote to acquit Trump because they are waiting on the courts. The case will be stuck in limbo in the Senate until they get a Supreme Court ruling.
This thing could drag out all the way to the general election

(15,292 posts)A Dem senator who was in office during the Clinton impeachment was on MSBNC, iirc, the other day explaining the process. He said that the presiding officer of the Senate, in this case it will be Roberts, rules on the motion for witness testimony or document requests, then there may or may not be a vote to override his decision.
Whichever way Roberts rules will be a good inidication of which way the Supreme Court will rule when these executive privilege/WH claims of total immunity cases come before it. If Roberts rules Bolton must testify, that is a sign the WH will lose all the lawsuits it has brought against Congress since Roberts is probably the 5th and deciding vote.
Another guest also explained that 50, not 51, votes are needed to have witnesses/documents and VP Pence has no role/vote whatsoever in the impeachment trial. I'm guessing this is because Roberts would be the tie-breaking vote and presumably would vote to uphold his own ruling/decision.
