Wisconsin dairy farmers suffer massive blow thanks to Trump's trade war

Source: americanindependent.com

Wisconsin lost 818 dairies in 2019 as farmers across the country suffer from Donald Trump's trade war with China.

The state of Wisconsin, famous for its cheese, lost 10% of its dairy farms in 2019, Dairy Herd Management reported on Thursday. The loss of 818 dairies was the largest decline in Wisconsin history.

Trouble for dairy farmers started in 2018, when Donald Trump engaged in a protracted trade war with China. In retaliation for increased tariffs from the United States, China placed tariffs on a number of U.S. agricultural exports.

As a result, exports of U.S. dairy to China dropped by more than 50% in 2019, according to CNBC.

The Trump administration rolled out a multibillion dollar bailout for farmers as the trade war dragged on, promising to make up for the financial damage caused by Trump's policies.

However, milk producers say the aid is not enough.

................................

According to Dairy Herd Management, the rate of dairy farmer loss in Wisconsin "has more than doubled in the last few years.".........................................

It is just not the dairy family that is in trouble but the farms support the businesses, schools, roads, etc around them.

Until a group of Dairy People step up and say enough,we are going stop this money loosing nightmare and ship those Dairy Cattle to the Packing house, nothing will change. Last I heard, there needs to be a immediate herd draw-down of tens of thousands of Dairy animals.

Before they are culled and sent to a slaughterhouse.

"The typical dairy cow lives an average of five years, with the first two years focused on providing a strong foundation for the healthy development of the cow. "

https://albertamilk.com/ask-dairy-farmer/how-long-does-the-average-dairy-cow-live/

"The average productive lifetime of the dairy cow in intensive milk production is decreasing around the world, with averages like 2.4 lactations in the US and Denmark. This shorter lifespan is mainly a result of what has generally been considered as sound economic decisions on profitability. "

http://www.milkproduction.com/Library/Editorial-articles/The-productive-lifetime-of-the-cow/

Unless one can buy the cows for very cheap, it doesn't make much business sense to buy cows that are older because the farmer would be shipping them off to the slaughterhouse not long after he gets them. A young milking cow would be worth some money.

Puked give away yard signs.
My local Dem. office said yard signs don’t work but charges $4-7 for them. Therefore you see tons of Puke yard signs and two Democratic. And that is on a state level. Locally it seems Democrat campaigns have just given up.

I know folks who ran for county offices who says they are Republicans just to have a chance.

That's right boys, take one for the grifter gipper and blame someone else. Do be prepared for more and more and more. This grifter will never stop. Too bad that's not obvious. He will just tell you it is all going great as he drains your life blood like a vampire.

You will never get your investment back and you are putting good money after bad, so to speak. It is time to eat your losses and dump that used car, (salesman). You have a loser who tells you it's winning. Is enough enough yet?

May I suggest considering this:

Sunk-Cost Fallacy

Description: Reasoning that further investment is warranted on the fact that the resources already invested will be lost otherwise, not taking into consideration the overall losses involved in the further investment.

"Double-digit drop in US dairy exports ‘not a crisis,’ says USDEC VP
11-Dec-2017 By Mary Ellen Shoup

US dairy exports have fallen behind 2016 levels, declining 11% in volume in October compared to last year, driven by the decline of nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NDM/SMP), according to USDEC data."

https://www.dairyreporter.com/Article/2017/12/11/Double-digit-drop-in-US-dairy-exports-not-a-crisis-says-USDEC-VP

A report published in 2016:

"DAIRY AND DAIRY PRODUCTS
Market situation
International prices of all dairy products continued to decline from their 2013 peak, in
particular for skim milk powder (SMP) and whole milk powder (WMP). A key factor was the
decline in Chinese import demand, with demand for WMP dropping by 34% from 2014
levels. This decrease in Chinese demand for dairy products was coupled with continued
production growth between 2014 and 2015, in key export markets, with total output of
milk increasing in Australia (4%), the European Union (2%), New Zealand (5%) and
the United States (1%)."

http://www.fao.org/3/a-BO101e.pdf

An excerpt from an article published in 2018:

"In prior posts, the growth of domestic dairy consumption, U.S. population growth, and milk supply growth were reviewed. Fluid milk consumption is currently decreasing by 3.3% annually and the trend indicates that the decrease will continue to accelerate. Cheese consumption continues to increase but at a slower rate than prior decades."
