Kennedy picks up John Lewis endorsement
Source: Boston Globe
Representative Joseph P. Kennedy III picked up some notable endorsements from House colleagues in his primary race against Senator Edward J. Markey, gaining the backing of several high-profile Democrats including civil rights icon John Lewis.
In the years that I have known Joe Kennedy I have seen him stand up and fight time and again for the suffering, the struggling and the silenced, said the 79-year-old Lewis, a Georgia Democrat who was a pivotal player in the civil rights movement.
At a moment of profound national crisis, Joe offers our country the kind of powerful moral leadership it needs. He is a clear voice for justice and dignity in our rising generation of public servants. I am proud to endorse his run for the U.S. Senate, Lewis said.
Kennedy also announced endorsements from more than a dozen other House Democrats who represent varying points on the political spectrum.

(7,596 posts)I don't blame Kennedy at all for running against him. Markey will be 74 this year. Who says Kennedy has to wait for him to retire? Markey doesn't own the seat. What if he decides to run for another term in 2026? That would mean Kennedy would have to wait until 2032 to get a shot at it. Clearly he didn't want to wait and I can't fault him for that.

(180 posts)There's no guarantee Markey would've retired after another term. Feinstein is in her 80's I think and she might run again!
