Jay Sekulow, an attorney for Donald Trump, argued on Tuesday that the president should not be removed from office by a Senate trial during an election year.
Sekulow made the remarks while defending the president on the Senate floor.
You are being asked to remove a duly-elected president of the United States, he told senators. And youre being asked to do it during an election year.

(24,450 posts)It's all relative with these people. They would not hesitate to try to impeach a Democrat no matter whether it's their first term, in an election year. They impeached Clinton in a (Congressional) Election year. The execution of justice does not and should not rest on such arbitrary distinctions.

I realize that is how the rawstory link words it, but it completely distorts the facts, and we should leave that task to the GOP and FOX.

(22,183 posts)hell did this language or interpretation come from in that during an election year, that a president can't be impeached?
No such language anywhere.
Sounds like to me that this lawyer is trying to make law, and this should piss off conservatives, since they're the ones always crowing about people / jurists making law unto themselves interpreting the law(s) passed by Congress (of course in a manner that they didn't want the law interpreted).

(6,234 posts)But then I'm a Democrat.
Using their logic, it's a matter of timing. But, Trump never stopped campaigning since day 1 of his first term. He certainly doesn't need time to get his message out to the voters.
So, how does this encumber him?
What's the down side?
Consider his trial as sort of pre-primary straw poll of 100 partisans.
We know Trump will be the Republican nominee, baring any strange, unforeseeable act of honor and integrity by the Republican Senators. It's just an embarrassing speed bump that his base will certainly overlook.
Trump will be the 2020 Republican candidate.
Pence might be gone, but Trump will remain.
It's the great, uncommitted middle of the electorate; the independents that are at stake here.
Trump can't win without the middle, so he needs a good old fashion exoneration by the Senate to cleanse the foul taste of impeachment from his palate.
Whining about removing him from office is just a way of looking for sympathy from the middle.
It sounds like sour grapes to me.

They must have hurried that amendment through when we were watching the hundreds of other dirty Trump dealings. I don't remember New York ratifying that amendment, but I guess with republicans there are shortcuts not available to Democrats. You can't take your eyes off these bastards for one second!
