Report: Anti- Semitic Incidents In US Hit Record High In 2019
Source: Associated Press
SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) American Jews were targets of more anti-Semitic incidents in 2019 than any other year over the past four decades, a surge marked by deadly attacks on a California synagogue, a Jewish grocery store in New Jersey and a rabbis New York home, the Anti-Defamation League reported Tuesday.
The Jewish civil rights group counted 2,107 anti-Semitic incidents in 2019, finding 61 physical assault cases, 1,127 instances of harassment and 919 acts of vandalism. Thats the highest annual tally since the New York City-based group began tracking anti-Semitic incidents in 1979. It also marked a 12% increase over the 1,879 incidents it counted in 2018.
Jonathan Greenblatt, the groups CEO, attributes last years record high to a normalization of anti-Semitic tropes, the charged politics of the day and social media. This year, he said, the COVID-19 pandemic is fueling anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Anti-Semitism is a virus. It is like a disease, and it persists, Greenblatt said. Its sometimes known as the oldest hatred. It never seems to go away. There truly is no single antidote or cure.
The ADLs count of anti-Semitic assaults involved 95 victims. More than half of the assaults occurred in New York City, including 25 in Brooklyn. Eight of those Brooklyn assaults happened during a span of eight days in December, primarily in neighborhoods where many Orthodox Jews live...

(18,470 posts)de Blasio, for instance was in such a big time hurry to be a tough guy that he didn't stop to consider what effects his words would have when he tweeted about a Jewish funeral.
World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said Wednesday he was recommending that the group formally censure de Blasio for his response to the funeral.
I agree with the Mayor that social distancing is vitally important and last nights gathering was not appropriate, Lauder said in a statement. But to blame the entire Jewish community is the type of stereotyping that is dangerous and unacceptable at any time, and particularly pernicious while the world is gripped in fear and the worst among us are looking for scapegoats.
Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted that generalizing about the whole Jewish population of New York City is outrageous especially when so many are scapegoating Jews.

" Michael Von Kotch, a Pennsylvania resident who called himself a Nazi, said the rally made him "proud to be white."
He said that he's long held white supremacist views and that Trump's election has "emboldened" him and the members of his own Nazi group. "

Like last night's example, with Paulo and Clelia Pinho. " 'Youre the reason why were getting sick,' one of the suspects allegedly said, according to police." https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142491613
I could swear I've heard that kind of talk somewhere else.
