Coronavirus Sanofi: France resists idea of US getting vaccine first
2 hours ago
France has said it would be "unacceptable" for French drug giant Sanofi to prioritise the US market if it develops a Covid-19 vaccine. The government was reacting to remarks by Sanofi CEO Paul Hudson, who said "the US government has the right to the largest pre-order because it's invested in taking the risk".
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said access for all was "non-negotiable".

"For us, it would be unacceptable for there to be privileged access to such and such a country for financial reasons," Deputy Finance Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher told France's Sud Radio.
The prime minister later tweeted that a vaccine should be for the benefit of everyone worldwide. President Emmanuel Macron said that recent efforts proved that a vaccine should not be subject to market forces, the Elysée Palace said. He is due to meet top Sanofi officials next week.

(23,018 posts)The disease will continue to spread. Immunity is not inherited and therefore, future generations will be vulnerable unless the disease is eradicated. EVERYONE needs to get the vaccine within a short (<2 year) window or the chances of the disease mutating to a strain the vaccine is effective against increases with each infection.

Intercept all shipments from Sanofi and redirect them to the FrenchCDC.

(35,382 posts)If the stuff's produced in India and India intercepts the production, (1) the company's not going to stop manufacturing it and (2) the vaccine's interdicted. Problem solved, whingeing won't help.
However, consider http://www.news.sanofi.us/press-releases?item=137015
Now, that's from 2007. I'm assuming it's still open, but it may no longer be the only production facility in the US these days. I think I've heard that Moderna has a plant either done or well along.
From Dec. 2019: https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2019/12/09/hhs-invests-modernizing-us-manufacturing-capacity-pandemic-influenza-vaccine.html
Even more recently: https://www.fastcompany.com/90495446/this-company-is-preparing-to-manufacture-100-million-doses-of-covid-19-vaccines
The bit about India wasn't a red herring. If the stuff's manufactured in the US, it's a question of who's around to intercept it.
Oh--and notice that one of the "we need it made here, for Americans" folk was Rick Bright. Chew on that.
There's also the outrage that would be expressed if we send 40 million doses to other places in the world when people's Aunt Sallies and Cousin Seymours were dying in Charlottesville, Oakland, Cleveland, and even in Jacksonville because of a shortage of vaccine in the US. Just as there was apparent outrage when there was the possibility of sending ventilators out of the US.
Sanofi also has production facilities in France., as well--with the proviso that I'm not going to dig around to see what vaccine production facilities they have--I just assume they have them among their sites. https://www.sanofi.fr/fr/nous-connaitre/nos-sites-en-france
