U.S.-China Feud Over Coronavirus Erupts at World Health Assembly

Source: New York Times

China’s president pledged $2 billion to fight the virus, a move the U.S. criticized as an effort to head off scrutiny of its handling of the pandemic.

A meeting of the World Health Organization that was supposed to chart a path for the world to combat the coronavirus pandemic instead on Monday turned into a showcase for the escalating tensions between China and the United States over the virus.

President Xi Jinping of China announced at the start of the forum that Beijing would donate $2 billion toward fighting the coronavirus and dispatch doctors and medical supplies to Africa and other countries in the developing world.

The contribution, to be spent over two years, amounts to more than twice what the United States had been giving the global health agency before President Trump cut off American funding last month, and it could catapult China to the forefront of international efforts to contain a disease that has claimed at least 315,000 lives.

But it was also seen — particularly by American officials — as an attempt by China to forestall closer scrutiny of whether it hid information about the outbreak to the world.

1. This is dangerous for not-so-obvious reasons

Trump is looking for someone to pin the virus blame on for his reelection campaign when all he has to do is look in the mirror to find the party most responsible.

However, a little history that came up in my discussions with my sister who is an owner of a well respected investment management firm:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoot%E2%80%93Hawley_Tariff_Act

Economists and economic historians have a consensus view that the passage of the Smoot–Hawley Tariff exacerbated the Great Depression

Economists felt those 1930 tariffs caused the Depression to be considerably worse.

Recently, Trump tariffs rattled those who study the stock markets because of what they did in the 1930s. And they fear that Trump will get into it with China (or the EU or the allies for example) and cause significantly more financial damage with trade problems than we're probably going to encounter with this unresolved virus.

Trump & the GOP may well kill or disable more than four million Americans pushing them back to work while this virus runs rampant. But if he gets into a fight with China, the financial damage could be considerably worse - and kill even more people.

The United States is more vulnerable than the 1930s in this regard because it no longer makes everything that it needs to function. PPE would be exhibit one.

Take it with a grain of salt but it seemed worthy to pass on.

As many around here feel, this man should not be in office and he'll continue to be a significant risk if he remains in that role unchecked. Hopefully, Biden can calm the fears and mitigate some of the damage and Pelosi can find some way to contain him.

5. At least we skipped WW1 unless you consider Iraq/Afghanistan as such ...

I do not.

Weapons are so devastating today, it's hard for me to fathom WW3

Of course, if we have more mentally ill leaders like Trump, anything is possible I suppose.

7. Although if you think about it, we hit Spanish Flu II and Great Depression II in the same year.

So maybe time is accelerated a bit. I'd hesitate to even think when WWIII could start, though Chump and Fox seem to be accelerating that thought too.

4. Something else to consider; China supplies 97% of US antibiotics & most other drugs.

If the US is unable to finesse a workable agreement with China, we're in trouble. I don't see much competence in this administration to handle something like this. They've been screwing up everything. Sometimes it's so bad they make it look like they're doing it on purpose.

- like they have something on Trump so he facilitates something that would never normally occur

If Putin has Pee Pee tapes, Trump has to do him favors ..

or a side deal - like the Saudi arms deal - where maybe the Saudis bailed out Trump companies who are financially struggling (probably like Russia did) in exchange for Trump getting them some arms the Saudis otherwise couldn't get.

Like we saw with Ukraine, US assets are Trump's assets to wheel and deal for his own self interest.

This is all according to Putin's plan.

The turd takes his marching orders from the Putin.

Putin's sole purpose is chaos and disorder. He is taking us down, "We will take America without a single shot fired".

We now know (from Republicans) that the proper name is the location from which the flu spread.

It was the KANSAS flu.
Pass it on. Reply to all users of the term 'China (Chinese) Flu'; "Oh, you mean like the Kansas Flu pandemic of 1918."
