On the left, many have advocated caution about easing public-health measures too soon. On the right, there are growing calls for the economy to reopen, allowing workers to return to their jobs...

The reason I think this is breaking news is because it mentions that the mortality rates amongst US counties, that have predominantly voted republican, is now slowly on the rise, and I think this is important to know and also worth watching.
If the cases continue to rise, how will this affect the election in five months?

(51,061 posts)The earliest stages of the spread naturally occurred there because of the greater concentrations of people.
But it is just as deadly in Podunk as it is in Los Angeles.
As you, and the ignoramus who wrote that ridiculous headline, will soon see.

I agree that is click-bait.

(49,054 posts)For the reasons you state, plus
... more poor people among Democrats than Republicons.
... worse healthcare than in the suburbs.
Also note that the headline is about the pandemic, not the virus.
Unfortunately Greed Over People has nationwide stranglehold on human decency.

(33,643 posts)But it's an obvious click-bait headline, no doubt.
There are disparities though between Red and Blue counties, that much is true. And it's not in our favor.

(160,655 posts)Why take your time to try to hammer someone who hasn't posted more than 78 times?
Usually that is considered a new-comer who hasn't spent a ton of time here reading and posting, yet.

I've been here since 2003 (originally as AmyStrange), and I think I've got over a thousand post, maybe more, and I should've been more careful, but I'm going to go fix that right now.

(36,747 posts)Just look at Alabama right now.
Less access to ICU facilities equals a higher mortality rate.
Amy-Strange
(854 posts)-
and that's what the article also said, including that mortality rates are also going up in predominantly GOP areas.

This is a very resilient virus.

Just look at Alabama right now.
"Alabama" is not synonymous with "rural areas". Even in comparatively rural Alabama, there are areas (Birmingham, Mobile, Montgomery) of much higher population density.

like I explained above, it's news because mortality rates from the virus are now increasing in predominantly GOP areas.
To me, that's important news.

(33,432 posts)I think this explains quite a bit about the White Riots we're seeing at State Capitols.
It just isn't as real in the Exurbs - it's there, but when it kills Urbanites in greater numbers, Conservatives could give a shit. Nothing's real until it happens to them.

(160,655 posts)Had you bothered to read the article, you would have seen the article was taken from Business Insider, which posted it slightly earlier. They also reprint articles from other reputable news sources, like the Washington Post, and the New York Times, never anything stupid or trashy, or idiotic. You would know this if you read the articles there.
I think you may be referring to Rachel Maddow. She does work at MSNBC.

(982 posts)and a senior killer. They believe it kills everyone except them. That's why they don't social distance, they don't respect mask requirements or stay-at-home orders. They believe somehow they are immune to it, or if they get it, it will be just like another flu, and that God will save them.
Amy-Strange

and I wonder how that will affect the election in five months?

(3,504 posts)Which isn't true. Take PA for example. Philadelphia and Allegheny County are typical Democratic strong holds, but numerically there are more registered Republicans in Allegheny County than any other county in the state. In Philadelphia County there are more registered Republicans than all but 7 counties (and one of those was Allegheny County). Allegheny and Philadelphia counties have as more registered Republicans as the 29 lowest populated counties in the state; only one of those counties had more registered Democratic voters than Republican voters.
So on the whole, there are substantial numbers of Republicans in the "Democratic" counties that the article kind of ignores. I will agree that some of this is just due to population density, but I'll argue that, at least in my state (Pennsylvania), a lot of it can be linked to social mobility. The areas with the highest incidence of COVID-19 cases are generally areas where people travel a lot in their daily routines (due mainly to economic circumstances). Longer commute times, work travel distances, work travel obligations, taking kids to sport activities and day care et cetera lead to a better chance of coming in contact with someone infected or if you are asymptomatic infected more people you can transfer the virus to.

(24,345 posts)It's actually quite good
The headline they put was designed as either click-bait or so they can claim a non-liberal bias
But, if you read it, it's quite nuanced and good.

(2,022 posts)have to be somehow tied into politics. This thread is a perfect example. I realize this is a political website, but come on! There are differences (not huge) in policy between democratic and republican states, but it seems it hasn't much mattered. It seems some places were destined to get hit hard, for reasons we don't yet fully understand, but I think it can be said it has little to do with politics.

I found it interesting to read that the mortality rates in areas that predominantly vote republican are beginning to go up, and I wonder how that will affect the election in five months.
That part of it is definitely political.
