'We need to live with it': White House readies new message for the nation on coronavirus

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — After several months of mixed messages on the coronavirus pandemic, the White House is settling on a new one: Learn to live with it.

Administration officials are planning to intensify what they hope is a sharper, and less conflicting, message of the pandemic next week, according to senior administration officials, after struggling to offer clear directives amid a crippling surge in cases across the country. On Thursday, the United States reported more than 55,000 new cases of coronavirus and infection rates were hitting new records in multiple states. At the crux of the message, officials said, is a recognition by the White House that the virus is not going away any time soon — and will be around through the November election.

As a result, President Donald Trump's top advisers plan to argue, the country must figure out how to press forward despite it. Therapeutic drugs will be showcased as a key component for doing that and the White House will increasingly emphasize the relatively low risk most Americans have of dying from the virus, officials said.

For nearly six months the administration offered a series of predictions and pronouncements that never came to fruition. From Trump promising that "the problem goes away in April" and predicting "packed churches all over our country" on Easter Sunday to Vice President Mike Pence's claim that "by Memorial Day weekend we will have this coronavirus epidemic behind us" to Jared Kushner's pronouncement the country would be "really rocking again" by July because Americans were "on the other side of the medical aspect of this."

After claiming that COVID-19 was a Democratic hoax, then that it would go away, then that Trump would win this war, the new message from Republicans appears to be, "Well, we all gotta go sometime." Why not, "Embrace the incompetence. Trump/Pence in 2020!"

as if that's the only issue, and not how sick it can make you, and the other long term damage it may do, or how those who don't die from it can still spread it to others who do.

There are figures where in some areas, 15% to 25% of the tests are coming back positive. If only 1% of those people die (which is GOOD based on current figures), that can still be an awful lot of dead people.

Covid isn't a medical problem it is just a messaging problem. So if they get the right message people will just forget about and then it will 'magically disappear'. I don't know whether to be really sad, really mad or both.

I hear on the news, that some who 'recover' from it often have strokes and heart attacks
and require months of rehab to get back to some kind of 'normal'.

I guess that's "living with it"?

Not wishing ill on anyone, of course, but I'd like to see how/if Trump's attitude changes
if/when one in his family gets it.

The only family people like that care about is someone they might inherit from, and so to keep in their good graces.

and the dead stacked like cord wood. They still don't get it, do they. A virus doesn't give a shit what you believe or what you think. It doesn't care about your politics or what god you pray to. It has no pity. No remorse. No human morals. It doesn't care about our social structures. It just replicates, and evolution mutates it to a form where it doesn't kill its host too quickly so it can spread and replicate again. And on and on. Other than a vaccine, a human tool for survival that evolution adapted us to create, all else is just human arrogance in the face of the natural world. The natural world always wins over human arrogance.

they're going for the "herd immunity" option. They probably figure it will do less damage to the economy, since the ones most likely to die aren't in the workforce anyway.

at least not to succumb to accepting that soon, everyone will be infected. And thus have managed to keep infections at a far far lower rate than in the U.S. while opening most of their economies.
