SEATTLE (AP) Two women were struck by a car whose driver sped through a protest-related closure on a freeway in Seattle, authorities said early Saturday.
A 24-year-old woman from Seattle suffered critical, life-threatening injuries and a 32-year-old woman from Bellingham had serious injuries, Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead said.
The driver, a 27-year-old man from Seattle, was in custody, Mead said, adding that impairment was not considered a factor. Charges remain under investigation, as does the motive and point of entry onto the interstate, but Mead said the unnamed man faced multiple felony charges and was suspected to have come on the wrong way on a ramp.
Mead said troopers did not know whether it was a targeted attack.

(3,175 posts)Judging by the picture of the driver posted below, I'd say the odds are pretty low that he's a Trumpanzee.

Driving at interstate speeds, which means faster than the limit. Dark, empty road.
Suddenly with no warning you see a van blocking 2 lanes. The only thing to do is take it to the shoulder or t-bone the van. The he immediately returned to the traffic lane. As should be done. While not hitting the throttle. Who expects people standing in the interstate?
I used to manage a team that did road closures. So I had to take, I think a 3 day DOT class on various lane closing laws. It been 20 years, but to close a lane on an interstate you have to give a miles worth of warning and again every 1/4 mile. At night you have to have illuminated signage. Even then, working on a road crew is incredibly dangerous. People just dont pay attention. Not even considering the drunks, testers and cell phone users.
Unless this guy was impaired or driving at an extreme speed I doubt he will be charged. Remember, he hit people illegally trying to close an interstate. While we may admire their courage it is incredibly dangerous and may put good people in a bad spot.
If I were still religious I would pray for all involved.
Trump has caused and will cause more acts of racial violence. But accidents still happen.

(1,568 posts)The exit he got on wasn't closed yet, and he just couldn't see until it was too late?
I haven't seen this latest video, but protesting on interstates like that doesn't seem like a good move. Sticking to surface streets seems like the safer route to go to carry out these sorts of protests.
**Just watched the video. Looks like the guy fled afterward. Even if he didn't see them until it was too late, that right there makes him an asshole.

(11,949 posts)And a big rig can be worse. Had he not taken it to the shoulder he would have hit that van. And had he not returned to the traffic lane he may well have hit all those people on the shoulder, who Im thinking he saw and want to avoid.
Shutting down an interstate puts lots of people in danger, not just the protesters.

(1,568 posts)It looks like he took off afterward. I saw some twitter chatter that he was drinking and driving. Of course, this being that being the internet, I have no clue if that's true. If he wasn't drinking, then I wonder if he'll claim he was in fear after hitting the people. He hit those women hard. I hope they make it through, and I hope people stick to closing down surface streets from now on.

WSDOT would use signs along the interstate to alert drivers about closures, while State Patrol and WSDOT vehicles blocked on-ramps in affected areas.

There aren't other vehicles approaching; it's clear the road has been closed. He had a good view of the vehicles forming the block that he went around. He had the space to stop, but tried to go round. He seems to have ignored the measures that stopped everyone else driving on the road. It's reckless driving at the least.
