Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly answers questions from reporters about the coronavirus pandemic after a meeting with legislative leaders, Thursday, July 2, 2020, at the Statehouse in Topeka, Kan. Kelly has issued an order to require people to wear masks in public and at their workplaces.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A weekly Kansas newspaper whose publisher is a county Republican Party chairman posted a cartoon on its Facebook page likening the Democratic governor's order requiring people to wear masks in public to the roundup and murder of millions of Jews during the Holocaust.
The cartoon on the Anderson County Review's Facebook page depicts Gov. Laura Kelly wearing a mask with a Jewish Star of David on it, next to a drawing of people being loaded onto train cars. Its caption is, Lockdown Laura says: Put on your mask ... and step onto the cattle car.
The newspaper posted the cartoon on Friday, the day that Kelly's mask order aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus took effect. It's drawn several hundred comments, many of them strongly critical.
Publisher Dane Hicks, who is also Anderson County's GOP chairman, told The Associated Press on Saturday that he would answer emailed questions about the cartoon once he could reach a computer. His newspaper is based in the county seat of Garnett, about 65 miles (105 kilometers) southwest of Kansas City and has a circulation of about 2,100, according to the Kansas Press Association.

(42,675 posts)Anti-maskers are taking risks that maskers aren't. The probability of dying is measurable in some way. Payouts to anti-masker families are sure to rocket.
I mean, they insure smokers and non-smokers in separate categories. Higher rates for smokers. Because they die sooner, on average. Same with anti-maskers.

(18,220 posts)It depends on what your status is when you sign up. If you start smoking after having been a non smoker the rate and payout will not change

(18,220 posts)Your insurance company can't
Do you really want insurance companies to be allowed to change your life premiums or benefits throughout the course of your life? They would like to have that ability...

(12,410 posts)Car insurance can change your rates if you get tickets; higher risk. Whats the difference?

(18,220 posts)Not guaranteed and adjustable
Life insurance is guaranteed renewable every year as long as you pay the premium. The rate is determined based on your age and health at the time you sign the application. It is guaranteed renewable at that same rate.
If you purchase a Term life policy it is guaranteed for the term you signed up for whether that is 10 years 20 years or something different. At the end of the term they are allowed to re evaluate you and change the premiums or even deny you continuous coverage at that point.
Whole life is signed up for your whole life. Unless you request a changeThe insurance company is not allowed to make a change in your rate. You can even sign up for guaranteed increases which you are allowed to take even if you have developed health issues. You will pay the increased cost of the coverage at the age you exercise that option but you cannot be denied coverage.
This is to protect the consumers who may sign up for life insurance then develop health issues which would prevent them from getting life insurance later in life. The company is not allowed to drop someone's life insurance just because they Develop diabetes or cancer later in life. On the flip side if someone was signed up for a whole life policy as a child they are protected even if they decide to start smoking, take up skydiving or engage in other risky activities when they become an adult. The insurance company is saddled with those choices the adult makes in exchange for the coverage they offered where they may receive 80+ years of premiums.

(8,576 posts)These insurance companies are gonna start kicking ass and taking names. No way are they gonna pay for stupid. Those waivers these idiots sign, probably sent directly to insurance adjusters. Face recognition from public places, and all the Karens, they are gonna be denied coverage when those million dollar 6 week hospital bills show up. And if ya die, good Luck next of kin, like they even give a shit if they leave that Burdon on their own family. Hospitals for profit will get their money, beleeee dat!

(38,359 posts)...I was teaching high school before the seat belt laws became mandatory everywhere. We argued and argued..The students knew, and they were not going go buckle up. I wonder if any remember those arguments? I do.
...I also wonder how many anti-seat belt users have had their lives saved by buckling up their seat belts & shoulder harnesses?
patphil
(6,033 posts)Lots of people just left the belt buckled behind them on the seat. I'm sure some people died because of their stupidity.
It's the same thing now with people wearing the mask over their throat where it doesn't do any good, but they're wearing it, and their message is that you can go f**k yourself.
Stupid people are all around us, always have been, and always will be!

(6,033 posts)Creating a message that mocks the use of the potentially life saving action of wearing a mask while simultaneously inserting an anti-semetic message into the picture.
The false equivalence of the two is not surprising; it's the kind of thing that is often used to sell a message of hate.

(5,707 posts)(Tried linking to the amateurish piece of shit but it didn't work. It's almost like they're ashamed of it for some reason!)
Rabbi Moti Rieber, executive director of Kansas Interfaith Action, said most if not all comparisons of current political events to the Holocaust are odious" and said it's incoherent to equate an action designed to save lives with mass murder. Finally, he said, putting the Star of David on Kelly's mask is anti-Semitic because it implies nefarious Jews are behind her actions.
This thing is like the trifecta of garbage, Rieber said, calling on Republican leaders to repudiate the cartoon and Hicks immediately.

(2,188 posts)That always sucks a big one. When I was an HHC Commander in an Infantry BN I had my Medical Plt set up a dirty wash, change out exercise in July at Bragg. The BN CDR had me run my Scout PLT down a lane and they got hit with Yellow Smoke , followed by our TOW Company. So we spent most of the afternoon running the exercise in hot, humid NC, shower tent, new MOPP gear swap out, decon the vehicles etc....That day sucked, but it showed the BN we could work the problem, survive, although it was miserable, and continue the mission. A litte N95 mask or bandanna is nothing compared to MOPP in the summer! HOAAAH!
