Brazil's Bolsonaro tests positive for coronavirus

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced Tuesday that he tested positive for coronavirus.
Brazil's coronavirus outbreak is one of the largest in the world, topped only by the U.S., and Bolsonaro has long downplayed the effects of the virus, pushing businesses to reopen over the last few months in order to jumpstart the country's economy.
Social distancing has steadily become less prevalent in the country, according to the influential IHME model.
Brazil's health ministry has frequently qualified its daily coronavirus death tolls with statements indicating the fatalities did not all take place within a 24-hour period, due to delays caused by investigations into the deaths.
Over 1.6 million people have contracted the disease in Brazil, and more than 65,000 have died, per Johns Hopkins data.
Flashback: Bolsonaro had a coronavirus scare earlier this year, when his press secretary tested positive for the disease in March -- days after meeting President Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

The Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has announced live on television he has tested positive for coronavirus.
"It came back positive," a mask-wearing Bolsonaro told a hand-picked group of reporters on Tuesday lunchtime.
Bolsonaro, 65, has repeatedly trivialized the pandemic and flouted social distancing, even as Brazil became the second-worst hit country after the United States, with more than 65,000 deaths and 1.6 million confirmed cases.
In March, as Covid-19 claimed its first victims in Brazil, the far-right populist used an address to the nation to brag that, if infected, he would quickly shake off the illness thanks to his "athlete's background".
Since then, Bolsonaro has continued to attend social events and political rallies, often wearing masks incorrectly, or not wearing them at all.

But you know what I mean. This is, like, his third "close call." He's done everything humanly possible to get it.

(5,351 posts)But I have to make an exception in this case. For all the pain and suffering he has caused his country it is only fitting that he should suffer great pain and long lingering side effects from this disease and maybe, just maybe it might change his behavior. But I doubt it, assholes like him and trump are usually assholes for life no matter what happens.

(11,692 posts)-Gets really sick, and as a turning point, learns to take this seriously for Brazil.
-Dies for all the world to see his futile stupidity.
-Gets slightly ill, revives and scores a big "see it's all nothing but the flu." Back to crazy land doubled.

(1,206 posts)The exception being that he won't actually have it, but will pretend to have it and then recover (with the help of hydroxychloroquine of course).
My feeling is that he realizes that A LOT of people see what's happening and his entire presidency as a reality show rather than uh, actual reality and this would be a perfect plot point for season three - a true comeback story.
As things get more and more dire for him with regard to re-election, I don't doubt for a minute that he'd try to pull it off.

Rest assured, people like that get the finest of medical care. Unlike average people, they won't be faced with "sorry, our ICU is completely full." Not that people don't die of it anyway, but prompt, quality medical care can increase the chances of survival. I'm sur that, if 45 got it, he'd survive, too. And each such type who survives it can then spread the gospel of "See? It's not so bad."

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro says he is confident that he will swiftly recover from the new coronavirus thanks to treatment with hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug that has not been proven effective against COVID-19.
Bolsonaro said he tested positive for the new coronavirus on Tuesday after months of downplaying its severity while deaths mounted rapidly inside the country.
The president told reporters he underwent a lung X-ray on Monday after experiencing fever, muscle aches and malaise. As of Tuesday, his fever had subsided, he said, and he attributed the improvement to hydroxychloroquine.
He stepped back from the journalists and removed his mask at one point to show that he looked well.
The 65-year-old right-wing populist who has been known to mingle in crowds without covering his face confirmed the results while wearing a mask and speaking to reporters huddled close in front of him in the capital, Brasilia.
