White House seeks to discredit Fauci as coronavirus surges
Source: NBC News
The White House is seeking to discredit Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's leading infectious disease expert, as President Donald Trump works to marginalize him and his dire warnings about the shortcomings of the U.S. coronavirus response.
In a remarkable broadside by the Trump administration against one of its own, a White House official said Sunday that "several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things." The official gave NBC News a list of nearly a dozen past comments by Fauci that the official said had ultimately proven erroneous.
Among them: Fauci's comments in January that the coronavirus was "not a major threat" and his guidance in March that "people should not be walking around with masks."
It was a move more characteristic of a political campaign furtively disseminating opposition research about an opponent than of a White House struggling to contain a pandemic that has killed more than 135,000 people, according to an NBC News tally.

(3,505 posts)The best statement he could have made was to get the hell out of Dodge at the first sign of smoke. He can't get these folks to listen so the best statement to make would be, "It was an honor and pleasure to serve the American people but I can't continue to work in my position if the President does not have confidence in me."
It would have been a loud and potent statement. I don't think he understands that staying only diminishes his standing. Get out before the whole thing implodes and people feel lesser of you. In reality, he's a smart man, he'll find meaningful work just about anywhere. He can't help us from the inside right now. Sorry but I don't think much of him since he doesn't seem to understand who he's dealing with.

(14,180 posts)We need a competent health expert in the mix somewhere at least. If only to give Trump the face palm on TV. Also of course to squeeze in pertinent information in between Trump's self promotion.
If Fauci resigned he'd be forgotten by the MSM, and instead this guy would be Trump's public heath expert.

(24,259 posts)I'm surprised it's taken this long and even more surprised that such an esteemed expert like Dr. Fauci hasn't told Trump to stuff it where the sun doesn't shine (only in a much more professional manner of course).

(6,139 posts)but I will say that most lasting damage was done back then in the month of February and March. Not only CDC said one should not wear masks - it said wearing masks make it more dangerous for you cause youd be touching face more frequently. Fauci agreed at the time which was beyond dumb to anyone observing from countries like Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, etc. - most successful in fighting this pandemic. For that, I wont be defending Fauci even if he was right on most other things. It was too fundamental and caused thousands of unnecessary lives to just let it slide.

(14,860 posts)... it was because they feared masks wouldn't be available to healthcare workers if they stated the truth to the general public.
I didn't like it, but I assumed that was the reason after the panic-buying and subsequent shortages of toilet paper and such.
It was NOT because they suddenly learned that asymptomatic people could transmit it. That was already published in China and elsewhere!
After major sellers like Amazon no longer made the better masks available unless buyers could show they were government or healthcare facilities, then Fauci and the CDC suddenly changed their tune about masks to the general public.
Edit: Most of the blame goes to Trump, of course. There's no way that he wasn't told about the concerns of mask shortages. He's just looking for a scapegoat, as usual.

(6,139 posts)we werent the only country with ppe shortages
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,860 posts)That's something Trump and his cronies would never do.
And I'm sure they could rationalize it by also claiming, which is surely accurate, that masks aren't as helpful as social distancing and isolation... which they were pushing all along.
Edit: The "clue" that I noticed back then (among others here at DU) was how Fauci often mentioned concern about shortages of PPE for frontline workers very soon after he was asked about masks for the general public.

(44,985 posts)Turns out that is not even a major mode of transmission. But I guess soap was available, and masks-not so much.
But I knew we were lied to from the start, because covid is a respiratory virus.

(7,404 posts)You can't just take a partial statement and fault it. You have to provide the context. I know the statement on masks was at a time when there was a dire shortage and what masks were available were needed desperately by the health care workers so the last thing we needed was a run on face masks. The January statement came before America had suffered its first death from the disease. Frankly, it is irresponsible to run with these charges without providing the context. Considering that these charges are coming from someone who recommended ingesting Clorox to kill the virus I know who I wouldn't be listening to.

(672 posts)or that our government would be so monumently useless. He explained why he said what he did about masks. There is no way that I would believe anything tRump or his imbeciles say when we know all the do is lie. tRump is just following Faux News and can't stand anyone contradicting him even if it means lives may be saved.

(11,885 posts)He refuses to help trump spread propaganda, and instead tells the truth about how badly the situation really is. trump wants everything to be about him and how great he's doing ,and has done , which Dr. Fauci knows is BS, and won't help him . So now trump is demonizing the best expert we have on virus and pandemics, which is going nowhere, and making trump again look like the fool. trump lies so much , and has intentionally put out misinformation on this virus knowing it was false. The virus is kicking trumps ass, and no spin will make him look good no matter who he tries to blame this time.
