McDonald's CEO says that workers might call the police on customers who won't wear a mask

McDonald's employees may call the police on a customer who refuses to wear a mask, CEO Chris Kempczinski said in an interview Thursday on CBS This Morning.
"If someone is unwilling to wear a mask and comply with our rules, that might be where we might bring in law enforcement," Kempczinski told Anthony Mason in the interview.
On July 24, McDonald's announced it would require all customers to wear masks starting August 4, after weeks of reports concerning harassment and abuse directed at workers by angry customers. A survey by Service Employees International Union found that 44% of McDonald's workers surveyed had experienced some form of abuse from customers who refused to wear a mask.
However, even though many major retailers now require customers to wear masks, many of those retailers say they aren't enforcing mask policies for fear of aggression from customers. Mask policies don't help employees navigate what has become a dangerous balancing act between keeping stores safe and keeping themselves safe.

(32,017 posts)A number of law enforcement officials have declared that they are not the mask police and will not enforce mask regulations. Perhaps, in the case of McDonalds, trespassing will be the charge. They might enforce that, but I am not optimistic.
It irritates me that the same police officers who would instantly arrest a topless woman in public (as if breasts were DANGEROUS) wont arrest a person who is in violation of the law for not wearing a mask (which definitely IS dangerous in the middle of this pandemic).

(65,427 posts)I remember reading about that sheriff. He was actually a mask wearer but didn't think they should be the mask police.
But, this McDonald's thing seems different.
If store management call the cops and wants them arrested for trespassing, the cops aren't the mask police.
They'd be enforcing long standing, well understood laws of private property.
I don't see how they could tell a McD's manager they won't enforce the law, if said manager is willing to press charges.

(49,075 posts)I think if a person refuses to leave when asked, they are trespassing in just about all jurisdictions.
Masks, shoes, and shirts do not fall under the human rights connecting race & gender to "public accommodations" (services open to the public).
Other useful ordinances that sometimes comes into play "disturbing the peace" and "interfering with the conduct of business", like if a person leaves but walks around the windows banging on them or haranguing customers as they enter. There is some overlap with civil disobedience, but protesters also validly get arrested at times too.

(218 posts)Or maybe you could hire security people to take care of these problems. Let the mega corp executive make millions and let the cashier battle the foaming at the mouth customer . Mask calls have got to be a real high priority for our police forces. This should work out fine.
