Pompeo Warned Russia Against Bounties on U.S. Troops in Afghanistan

Source: New York Times

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned Russia’s foreign minister against Moscow paying bounties to Taliban-linked militants and other Afghan fighters for killing American service members, U.S. officials said.

Mr. Pompeo’s warning is the first known rebuke from a senior American official to Russia over the bounties program, and it runs counter to President Trump’s insistence that the intelligence from U.S. government agencies over the matter is a “hoax.” The action indicates that Mr. Pompeo, who previously served as Mr. Trump’s C.I.A. director, believes the intelligence warranted a stern message.

Mr. Pompeo delivered the warning in a call on July 13 with the minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, choosing to do so during a conversation that, officially, was about an unrelated topic — the possibility of a meeting of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the U.S. officials said in the past week.
...
The American officials who spoke about Mr. Pompeo’s call did so on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. Mr. Pompeo and the State Department have been careful not to reveal any details of actions he might have taken based on the intelligence over the bounties. That is perhaps because of both the classified material and to avoid potential fury from Mr. Trump, who has strongly dismissed reports of the intelligence and has tried to cultivate a friendship with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

Mr. Pompeo’s private move is the latest example of a common occurrence in the administration: American officials quietly carrying out actions that are at odds with Mr. Trump’s statements and his stance on important issues.

Because Trump is the Russian asset in the regime. Too stupid and unreliable to be directly following orders, but invaluable as a disruptor and distractor.

As Charles Pierce says, this could be the Republican campaign doing damage control - make it look like someone in the regime knows what they're doing:

So the president* takes a few weeks of serious incoming on this issue and, suddenly, it emerges that his Secretary of State has been getting salty with the Russians over it. Has the president* been lying about this, or is he simply as ignorant on this bit of business as he has been about every other thing involved with his job? Has the SecState has been called in to smooth over some damage to the re-election campaign? And, at this point, does it even matter?

Pompeo or one of his team has to be the source of this report. They feel a need to distance themselves from Trump in order to have a possible career post-Trump.

If Pompeo is the source, he will probably resign in the next month or so to increase his chances of having a career post-Trump.

Pompeo wants to run for pres next time. He's just pretending that he's the one who will hold Putin to account, when in fact he's too craven to actually defy Trump.

What you can't show happening didn't in the GOP circles Mikey inhabits. He bows to Vlad as quickly as Donald does, but he doesn't pucker up as sweetly.
