N.Y.P.D. Besieges Black Lives Matter Leader as He Broadcasts Live
Source: New York Times
Derrick Ingram, a Black Lives Matter organizer, was besieged inside his Manhattan apartment on Friday while a police helicopter patrolled overhead, officers banged on his door and police dogs growled in the hallway.
The street outside had been closed off by roughly two dozen police vehicles and dozens of officers, including some who were wearing riot gear. At the end of the block, Black Lives Matter supporters had gathered with bullhorns and cameras to protest what appeared to be Mr. Ingrams imminent arrest.
What did I do? What did I do? he said on a livestream posted on Instagram. I was born Black, thats what I did.
The tense standoff in the Hells Kitchen neighborhood continued for several hours as Mr. Ingram, 28, talked to lawyers via Zoom and communicated with the outside world over the Instagram video. He declined to let the officers enter his apartment without a warrant.

I'm sure they were hoping the assault would happen once they gained entry into the apartment and arrested Mr. Ingram...Perhaps they would have put him in an illegal choke hold, or put a knee to his neck.
I'm so glad he is OK and the PIGs (yes, this is what these particular officers are, and I have a brother that is retired COP) left. I HATE THESE KINDS OF COPS!

(14,250 posts)They can break in and make the arrest.
Clearly, they didn't have a warrant to arrest.
They may have wanted to interview him, but they didn't have grounds to arrest him. yet.
Now they will claim he is interfering with an investigation by not answering questions.
He is a dead man walking unless someone official intervenes.

(44,555 posts)And given the nature of the charge, why would they have given up and "withdrawn"?
Sounds like the warrant was issued "retroactively," like Mitt Romney's retirement from Bain Capital.

(264 posts)Police can break in with a SEARCH warrant. An arrest warrant just directs them to arrest the person on sight. As long as he doesn't step outside of his home, they can't break in unless there are "exigent circumstances".

(5,584 posts)An arrest warrant is not the same as a search warrant. Shes going to be arrested as soon as she leaves her residence, and the cops can apply for a search warrant if they decide to go in and get her.

(17,781 posts)Where the hell is de Balsio? Maybe it's different in NYC. In the southern city I grew up in, the buck stopped in the mayor's office. And I've seen mayors of my old home town chew police chiefs a new A hole.

(44,555 posts)City police unions slammed the Police Department for retreating from an hours-long standoff at the home of a Black Lives Matter organizer accused of assaulting a cop.
The NYPDs top brass better start talking: Who really issued the order to retreat? asked PBA President Pat Lynch in a statement. Who put police officers in the dangerous position of backing down in the face of an angry mob?
The Detectives Endowment Association joined in rebuking the departments decision, demanding an explanation. By walking away from arresting a man who was wanted for previously assaulting a cop and backing down to an angry mob, the lives of detectives and their fellow cops were endangered and their valuable time was wasted, said Paul DiGiacomo, the associations president.
They're damned right that an explanation is needed -- if they neither search or arrest warrants, they had no business being there. At least the cops who ended up killing Breyonna Taylor were acting on the "good faith" of a no-knock search warrant, however incorrectly issues. Those kind of information/communication breakdowns on the front end are what's poisoning community relations and endangering everyone's lives!
