Record U.S. coronavirus fatalities and 'startling surge' of cases in children and teens
Source: NBC News
The U.S. logged the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in two weeks, a new NBC News tally showed Thursday, but widespread testing shortages raised concerns that the figures coming out of the hardest-hit states might not be presenting a true picture of this deadly pandemic.
The 1,424 fatalities reported Wednesday were the highest since July 28, when 2,218 deaths were reported, the figures showed. And it was the twelfth time in the last 16 days that the death toll exceeded 1,000.
Most of these deaths were in the Southern and Sun Belt states like Florida, Texas and Arizona that began reopening in May and June at the urging of President Donald Trump despite warnings from public health experts that the coronavirus was starting to crest.
"The deaths we see today are a result of infections from four to eight weeks ago," Admiral Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary of health and the Trump administration's testing coordinator, said Thursday on a call with reporters.

(51,777 posts)the logic here. In March there were far fewer cases and deaths and schools across the country closed. Now that there are more cases and deaths schools are opening back up?!? Huh? If we close schools in March when there was less community spread, why are we opening up when there is MORE of a community spread? I don't get it. It doesn't make sense.

(13,686 posts)trump is used to just blurting things out and have his sycophants and fixers make it happen. that doesn't work with a deadly virus, though. nevertheless, the magas get riled up and the states, usually with a trump-loving governor, adopt the same denial philosophy. everything opened up way too soon and all the progress made during the shutdown was lost and we'll have to do it all over again. the only question is how high the pile of dead bodies has to get before they're forced to do the right thing.
if i were such a governor, i would be terrified for my very life. As kids start dying, how long will it be before a distraught parent, or group of parents, will become so enraged that they'll feel like they have nothing left to live for and will drag them out of their mansion and slash their throat?

(17,315 posts)said a small group of parents protested for opening the schools. So the school board is going against the Board of Health recs and opening the schools. I wish the parents who don't want to risk their kids lives would go out and protest. But I imagine they will keep the kids home and do homeschooling.
And I wish the deniers would shut up.

(1,733 posts)My son goes to school in Oceanside and I have been thoroughly impressed with their transition to online learning, but since the school shut down in March, many parents have been arguing and fighting with the school to reopen (gasp!)!!! School is now starting next week, online, but so many parents are pushing back on this that the school is asking for parents to help them petition with San Diego County to get a waiver and open their doors.
Right now, I'm seeing parents fighting for their personal situations rather than fighting for the well-being of not just the students, but everyone involved in their child's education and this just blows me away. Even when they do re-open, I will fight to keep my son at home, because this argument is complete and utter BS.

(51,777 posts)and get a doctor's note. I have done it before and I wouldn't hesitate to do it now.
I believe one reason they want to put their kid and family in harm's way is that the kids staying home is too much of a burden on mom and dad. They want their free babysitters back. Selfish assholes!

(21,888 posts)Trump doesn't give a shit how many Americans die, his campaign ads are all geared for the economy. Chairman Powell has central banks on standby to pump more money into Wall Street if needed.

(10,406 posts)It all about schools being the place to park kids while mom and dad work. And minority and poor kids are especially hit hard because many of them do not have reliable access to the Internet for distance learning and their parents really need to work to keep paying their bills.
Trumps insistence on getting everyone back to work right away is backfiring because with more deaths and cases, more parents are wary of sending their kids back to school. The economy cannot come back until the virus is under control. One would think that concept easy to understand, but the dullards in the White House seem unable to grasp it.
I think the stonewalling behind the Republican refusal to negotiate a new relief bill is that if they refuse to provide unemployment money, parents will be forced to go back to work and thus forced to send their kids to school. If more people get sick and die, so be it. They really dont carethe motto of the whole Trump administration. Thats the Republican way when wealthy people arent involved.
