Kyrsten Sinema Dooms Democrats' Voting Rights Push

Source: HuffPost

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) took to the Senate floor on Thursday to tell her fellow Democrats that she would not support changing the chamber's filibuster rules in order to pass voting rights legislation.

"There is no need for me to restate my position," Sinema said, as she explained she opposed changing filibuster rules that require a 60-vote supermajority to pass most laws as it would deepen the "spiraling division" in the country.

"Demands to eliminate [the 60-vote filibuster] threshold from whichever party holds the fleeting majority amount to a group of people separated on two sides of a canyon, shouting that solution to their colleagues," Sinema said. "And that makes the rift with wider and deeper."

The dramatic speech came as President Joe Biden headed to the Senate to speak with members of the Democratic caucus about the urgency of changing the filibuster rules in order to pass a voting rights bill by a simple majority vote. The speech diminishes hopes Democrats have of enacting legislation to combat the wave of voter suppression bills passed by Republicans on the inspiration of ex-President Donald Trump's election fraud lies in the states they control.

Its interesting that she doesn't care if she is the lone vote to destroy the greatest democracy on Earth as Manchin seems to be backing Biden on this one but for how long who knows.

We live in a Bizarro world when a Cheney is acting more like a Democrat than a Dem Senator.... This is the inevitable result of the Citizens United and legalized bribery rulings of the Federalist Society judges.

We have the 'democracy' that we can afford. If you can buy the right votes, you can block everything that you don't like and push through the couple of things (tax breaks for the rich) that you want.

Plutocracy at work.

New Zealand looks better and better every day.

He says it's probably to a small group of Libertarian business people who don't want to pay taxes that will fund programs for the less fortunate.

I'm quoting him pretty much verbatim. He did use the word "probably."

In Mary Trump's most recent podcast, she joked that we could just outbid whoever is buying off Manchin and Sinema.

still required 51 votes, and I don't think that will change the votes from Sinema and Manchin

We are getting sabotaged from all sides. By the republicans, the news media, and by two Senators within the Democratic party

It is no surprise why President Biden's approval numbers are low.

this has been my thinking and fear all along. The two senators are really Republicans. Their skin color seems to be on entitlement ,so they are working with their real party the Q party because it won't effect them because they can just change parties and was probably was promised some things behind the scenes. They are barely with the Dems when they are walking or running to their cars. They are mostly with Republicans. There is also pictures of Joe and Trump smiling together out there in social media somewhere because I have seen it.They are not dens. I feel our country is already lost because if we lose the house next year, is bad enough and scary, but the senate too.We are in danger.Bill Mahar was right about leaving the country because he can see what is coming. They have gaslighted half the country and lies like running water.I have lost all hope and nothing I see is making me feel any better.

many of the 'powerful' people in the US are FOR an autocracy as they feel they will be more powerful than they are now. It will be the upper echelon that will rule and they want to be in that circle. Someone said Sinema better realize that there won't BE a Senate but that seems to be OK with this ruling crowd. Tell me I am crazy.

That she is quoted as saying "Demands to eliminate [the 60-vote filibuster] threshold..." (emphasis added), and not "Demands to change the filibuster..."

Manchin says he is or could be in favor of changing the filibuster to make it so that the minority work for it (like make it a talking filibuster). Sinema did NOT say that she opposes that at all (in fact, she never even mentioned this possibility), she just explicitly said that she opposes ELIMINATING the filibuster.

I'm not defending her, but this could be a head fake to make the Repukes think that she's going to do them a big favor. Then again, she could just screw Team Blue completely...

from Slate-

"During the 2019-2020 Congressional term, a record-breaking 328 filibusters were recorded with Democrats in the minority.

Since 2009, 657 filibusters were recorded under Democratic minorities while 609 filibusters were recorded under Republican minorities.

Research by Slate on filibusters between 1991 and 2008 found that Democrats successfully filibustered 63 times while Republicans successfully filibustered 89 times."

in the country because Democrats will simply not be at any side of the "Grand Canyon". They will probably not even be able get elected, but if they somehow do, they will have their victories overturned by MAGAT dominated election boards.

I never hear about any counter insurgency plans. Storming the doors of her largest donors. Exposing them. Put whatever pressure can be put on her. Disown her publicly, and write editorials against her.

Start to promote her replacement already.

On the carrot side, Democratic leadership should approach the companies that would benefit from the BBB bill, and make promises about what they'd get, or lose. Voting rights bill, run ads across the State on how important they are.

And there is probably some behind the curtain actions could be taken against her, or threats to do so. Nothing should be off the table at this point. She has to go down. Disappear off the political map.

Maybe some of this is already happening. But I sure don't hear about anything. She just prances around and only gives careful crafted interviews with softball questions. Enough already!

The fascist Trump Party is busy rigging the vote by suppression, and she is assisting. She is aiding the Trump Party to take over the country in an undemocratic way, and we will all be in trouble if the Repubs get their hands on the House and Senate. Hell, at this point, just bring back earmarks and use that to get Republican votes for critical legislation rather than letting a couple of Democrats obstruct the rest of the party.
